Libro.

(see photographs) "From the thundering plunge of Victoria Falls to the desolate shores of the Skeleton Coast, from the vast expanse of the Kalahari Desert to the wooded slopes of South Africa's Drakensberg mountains, Wild at Heart crisscrosses southern Africa to examine a world in transition, a world seeking to achieve a balance between the demands of progress and the desire to conserve a natural legacy unique on our planet. Award-winning photographer Chris Johns and bestselling writer Peter Godwin are a veteran National Geographic team who have covered the region for years, and they offer a knowledgeable perspective on the conservation issues facing Africa today. Johns' stunning and evocative images provide a breathtaking backdrop for Godwin's text, a wonderful mix of colorful anecdotes and informed analysis that explores a complex and interdependent environment where the needs of a fast-growing population often collide with the effort to protect and preserve the wildlife that is one of Africa's greatest glories. Reporting from the front line of conservation, they explain how war, poachers, and economic instability threaten such magnificent species as elephants, rhinos, and cheetahs, and how well-meaning but misguided conservation projects have altered migratory patterns and upset the ecological balance. They look at such controversial measures as the culling of elephant herds and discuss the difficulties of developing policies that encourage local peoples to see wildlife as a profitable resource worthy of preservation rather than an obstacle to human development. In page after page of superb photographs, Johns shows us Africa's peoples, places, and amazing diversity of creatures, while Godwin's commentary offers insights into everything from ancient folktales to today's problems and opportunities to the possibilities for an Africa future that empowers its human inhabitants without endangering their priceless natural inheritance. Featuring an eloquent introduction by Nelson Mandela, Wild at Heart shows us Africa as it is today - and looks ahead to its problematic yet promising future, where, with good fortune and good management, human progress can coexist with the invaluable natural legacy that makes Africa unique in the world." - from the inner front jacket flap.
