Neben dem vorliegeden Band gab er 1841 den katalog der Stadtbibliothek Solothurn heraus.

Er wurde jedoch 1911 gegen seinen Willen in eine psychiatrische Anstalt eingewiesen und lebte ab 1913 bis zu seinem Tod als Patient der damals abgelegenen Pflegeanstalt Rheinau. Seine Krankenakte vermerkt, dass Bachofner unentwegt zeichnete und sich die Blätter zu Hunderten neben seinem Tisch stapelten. Davon haben sich 70 aussergewöhnliche Zeichnungen zu von ihm erfundenen grossen Maschinen erhalten. Sie belegen seine grandiose Originalität als Erfinder und sein enormes Fachwissen, das umso bemerkenswerter ist, als ihm in der Pflegeanstalt keinerlei Fachliteratur zur Verfügung stand.
