Once properly matted and framed, these marvellous engravings make wonderful pieces of decorative art for the home or studio. Published by the John Tallis Company in London. Measurements as follows: paper size 7-1/4" by 11", image including decorative borders 6 x 8", margins approximately 1". Paper thickness and quality: heavy stock, stable. Paper colour: off-white/cream. Imperfections: bottom margin has watermark 6-1/2 x 2" encroaching on lower edge of decorative work, image area no defects, verso clean. Light foxing. The image is of the Right Honourable William Windham, drawn by Sir John Reynolds and engraved by W.T. Fry. The publisher of this work is the John Tallis Company of London, an English cartographic company that published views, maps, atlases and scholarly works from 1838 to 1851. Their main engraver was John Rapkin, known for his decorative stylized work and lovely vignettes and who is considered the last bastion of English decorative cartography in the 19th century. The John Tallis Company also used engravings by other fine artists, such as William Finden, Thomas Stothard, DJ Point, Peter Lightfoot and several others. For general interest, the background of a few of these magnificent engravers follows. William Finden originally served as an apprentice under the guidance of James Mitan but his work is more generally influenced by James Heath. He first worked engraving book illustrations - one of the more noteworthy of these early plates were Smirkes illustrations for Don Quixote. His fastidious style and smooth finish made his work extremely popular and along with his brother Edward he eventually hired a company of assistants to produce additional works. Thomas Stothard ( 1755-1834) was both a painter and engraver who produced about 5000 designs, of which 3000 were engraved. A 4-volume collection of his engravings is now held by the British Museum. William Thomas Fry ( 1789-1843, active 1829 to 1935 ) among other works engraved 8 portraits for Edmond Lodge's Portraits of Illustrious Personages of Great Britain, contributed 4 plates to Fisher's National Portrait Gallery 1830-1834 and 11 to Jones' National Gallery 1836. Er war insbesondere Erster Lord der Admiralität 1959, von 1979 bis 1982 britischer Außenminister sowie von 1984 bis 1988 Generalsekretär der NATO. Carington erhielt seine Ausbildung in Eton und Sandhurst. 1938 erbte er nach dem Tode seines Vaters Rupert Carington dessen Titel Baron Carrington. Nach Erreichen der Volljährigkeit 1940 wurde er Mitglied des britischen Oberhauses. Im Zweiten Weltkrieg diente Carington als Major bei den Grenadier Guards und erhielt das Military Cross verliehen. 1942 heiratete er Iona McClean, mit der er zwei Töchter und einen Sohn hatte. In den Jahren 1964 bis 1970 war er Oppositionsführer im Oberhaus. Unter der konservativen Regierung Edward Heaths (1970-1974) war er zunächst Verteidigungsminister sowie 1974 kurzzeitig Energieminister. Außerdem hielt er zwischen 1972 und 1974 die Position des Vorsitzenden (Chairman) der Konservativen Partei. Unter den Labour-Regierungen 1974-1979 war er erneut Oppositionsführer im Oberhaus. In der ersten Regierung Thatcher erhielt Carington 1979 das Amt des Außenministers. Er war Gastgeber der Rhodesienkonferenz von 1979, die zum Abschluss des Lancaster-House-Abkommens und zur Beendigung des anhaltend blutigen Rhodesienkonflikts führte. Anschließend wandte er sich dem Nahen Osten zu und suchte hier nach verhandelbaren Lösungen für die dort noch anstehenden Probleme aus der früheren Kolonialpolitik Großbritanniens. Obwohl selbst nicht direkt verantwortlich, übernahm er im April 1982 nach der argentinischen Invasion der Falklandinseln die Verantwortung für die begangenen Fehler im Außenministerium und trat zurück, was das Ende seiner Regierungskarriere bedeutete.[2] Sein Nachfolger wurde Francis Pym. Am 25. Juni 1984 wurde er zum Generalsekretär der NATO ernannt und blieb dies bis zum 1. Juli 1988. In dieser Zeit setzte er sich besonders für die Herstellung ?normaler? Beziehungen zur UdSSR ein. 1991 bis 1992 war er Verhandlungsführer der EG-Friedenskonferenz für den Balkan. Dabei ging es vor allem um Verhandlungen für eine friedliche Auflösung Jugoslawiens und die Minderung der dort bestehenden Konflikte. Neben verschiedenen Vorstandsmitgliedschaften war Carington Vorstandsvorsitzender bzw. Generaldirektor bei mehreren Unternehmen, darunter Christie?s, Barclays Bank, Cadbury Schweppes und Daily Telegraph. Außerdem war er von 1989 bis 1999 Vorsitzender der Bilderberg-Konferenz und seit 1992 Rektor der University of Reading. Am 17. November 1999 wurde ihm zusätzlich zu seinem erblichen Adelstitel eine Life Peerage mit dem Titel Baron Carington of Upton, of Upton in the County of Nottinghamshire, verliehen. Er behielt dadurch seinen Sitz im House of Lords auch nach der Abschaffung erblicher Parlamentssitze durch den House of Lords Act 1999. Er war nach dem Tod von George Jellicoe, 2. Earl Jellicoe das dienstälteste Mitglied im House of Lords und saß nach dem Duke of Edinburgh am zweitlängsten im Privy Council. 1988 veröffentlichte er seine Memoiren unter dem Titel ?Reflect on Things Past?
