Ziel der Untersuchung ist es, die im Erscheinungsbild überraschend ungleichen Holzschnitte aufgrund ihres Spiritus rector als einheitlichen Komplex zu beschreiben, zu erklären und zu würdigen: Die ikonographischen Besonderheiten der Holzschnitte spiegeln individuelle «likes and dislikes» des Celtis, Unstimmigkeiten in den Details stehen mit den wechselvollen Planungen für Ort und Zeitpunkt, Widmung und Umfang seiner Werkausgabe in Zusammenhang. Das Gesamtprogramm der Holzschnitte schließlich wird als bildliche Umsetzung einer aktuellen literarischen Gattung verstanden, der defensio poetices. ? Kurzinterpretationen zu den Texten der Nürnberger Edition von 1502, zu den «Amores», der «Germania generalis» und der «Norimberga», runden den Band ab. 459 Seiten und 58 Tafeln, broschiert (Europäische Hochschulschriften. Kaiser Maximilian hatte im Oktober 1501 auf Wunsch und Drängen des Celtis an der Wiener Universität ein Dichter- und Mathematikerkolleg gegründet. Celtis, der Vorstand dieser innovativen Institution, brachte den Allegorischen Reichsadler wohl als Präsent in Umlauf, um für sein Kolleg zu werben. Für den heutigen Betrachter ist dieser Einblattholzschnitt ein «Rätselbild», die kleinteilige allegorische Darstellung gibt ihre Intentionen nicht ohne weiteres zu erkennen. Erst der Rückgriff auf geeignete zeitgenössische Dokumente verschafft uns Aufschluß über Sinn und Bedeutung des Bildganzen wie seiner Details. Dabei zeigt sich, daß wir ein «Denkbild» mit programmatischem Anspruch vor Augen haben, das weit über die Tagesaktualität hinaus poetologische Grundpositionen in bildhaft-enigmatischer Kürze vor Augen stellt.
