Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. 2nd Edition. Viking Penguin, a division of Penguin Books USA Inc., New York, New York, U.S.A., 1991. First (1st) Printing of the Second (2nd) Edition. See the discussion below for explanation. Near Fine in a Fine mylar-protected Dust Jacket. The Text Block is clean, white, tight, straight and square with a small stain to the bottom of the fore-edge. The Binding is black quarter cloth to cinnamon colored boards, mild discoloration to the bottom 1/4", bright copper title, etc., to the spine, unmarked red endpapers, front free endpapers uneven at the fore-edge, and all corners square and mostly sharp. The mylar-protected Dust Jacket would be flawless but for a small imperfection at the bottom of the fold of the rear flap. The original prices (US $25.00 Canada $35.00) are intact on the front flap. See the photos. xli [acknowledgments, maps, Introduction], 645 pages, including a new Epilogue by the author, an Afterword by Attorney Marcus Garbus, and Notes. See the photos (made with mylar protector in place). 6 1/2" x 9 1/2". This historical non-fiction work tells the aftermath of a fatal shootout between FBI agents and American Indians near Wounded Knee, North Dakota that resulted in two FBI agents and one Indian killed. Leonard Peltier, an American Indian, was convicted of murder and sentenced to two life sentences. The author wrote in the Introduction, "Whatever the nature and degree of his participation at Oglala, the ruthless persecution of Leonard Peltier had less to do with his own actions than with underlying issues of history, racism, and economics, in particular, Indian sovereignty claims and growing opposition to massive energy development on treaty lands and dwindling reservations." Immediately the book was published in 1983, it was suppressed by several libel suits. Eventually, all of the lawsuits were resolved in favor of the author and publisher, resulting in this Second Edition (with a new ISBN) which includes the Epilogue by Matthiessen discussing the post-publication legal events and also an Afterword by Attorney Marcus Garbus, who participated in some of the lawsuits. NOTE: This is a heavy book, weighing 1,185 grams / 41.8 ounces, and will require extra postage for international shipment. ISBN 10: 0670836176 / ISBN 13: 9780670836178.…

dj. First printing thus. 645 pp. 9.5" x 6.5" ILLEGAL INVESTIGATIVE REPORTNG Lawsuits stripped Peter Matthiessen's searing investigation of the 1975 Pine Ridge shootout and Leonard Peltier's ensuing trial from the shelves. Claiming harassment and libel, FBI agent David Price and South Dakota governor William Janklow rioted against the National Book Award-winner's portrayal of the clash between FBI agents and the American Indian Movement (AIM). Viking published Matthiessen's first edition since the the lawsuit eight years later as a First Amendment victory, setting the precedent for controversial investigative reporting.
