It does not claim to be an encyclopaedia, only a Small guide to some of the toys that one could find in Victorian nurseries. Naturally, in those days there were also other toys like wooden toys, tin soldiers, and optical toys. The most conspicuous feature of old toys is that there is absolutely no relation of scale between the different items. This is why the aeroplane is bigger than the Zeppelin and the beetle is twice as large as the motherduck. This very fact accounts for a great deal of their charm ? they give free scope to one's imagination. The tinplate figures are often crude, even grotesque caricatures, e.g. the American tourist with his suitcases or the ladies in their three-wheeled automobile. They possess a kind of "over-realistic naturalism" that fascinates not only children but perhaps especially grown-ups. The mechanical toy had its breakthrough in the 1870s. Although mechanical objects had been made long before then, they were mostly not toys but expensive automats combined with a musical movement. The industrial revolution in Europe also spread to the toy industry and countries like Germany, France ."
