Das Buch untersucht diese normative Wirklichkeit und ihre Ontologie. Normativität gibt es nicht in der von uns unabhängigen Wirklichkeit. Wie kommt sie dann in die Welt? Was sind ihre Existenzbedingungen? Wie entsteht der normative Handlungsdruck? Zentrale Untersuchungsgegenstände sind Gründe und Normen: was sie sind, was ihre Existenzbedingungen sind und was ihre normative Kraft ausmacht. Und wie entstehen komplexere normative Phänomene, wie z. B. dass man zu etwas verpflichtet ist oder auf etwas Anspruch hat? Was sind die Existenzbedingungen von normativem Status, die einen zu bestimmten Handlungen berechtigen, ermächtigen, verpflichten? Wie kommt es zum Phänomen institutioneller Macht, die man nicht aufgrund physischer Überlegenheit, sondern infolge einer normativen Position über andere Menschen hat? Und von welcher Art ist die spezifisch moralische Normativität?
