One reason for this large attention is the strange narrative form due to the combination of the Indian ¿storytelling¿, myth, poetry and a plot that takes place in a modern western1 environment. Another reason for the remarkable success of this novel is Silkös way to show the negative repercussions on Native Americans caused by racism, alcoholism, dislocation, poverty as well as the industrial exploitation of the land.In this paper I will discuss one of the principal themes presented in Leslie Silkös Ceremony: the issue of Native American identity. In the first part I will briefly introduce the characters of Tayo and Rocky, two Native Americans who grew up on a reservation for the Laguna Pueblo in New Mexico. After that I will examine the similarities between these two young men who both take part in the Second World War and make horrible experiences. In the main part of this paper I will try to find out the differences between Tayo and Rocky in order to explain their different ways of searching their own identity. Furthermore I will explore the sources of Tayös selfdestructive behaviour and his problem of alienation. Therefore I will have to ponder on the following questions: How does the white culture influence these characters Do both men suffer from the loss of Indian self-esteem What are the effects of internalized racism and colonization on the health of Tayo Why is Tayo able to return to the community to lead a stable and productive life In the final comment there will be a concluding assessment and a summary of the theme.…

'Nobody knows exactly what the actual crime rate is in America but everybody knows it is too high.'1 In fact, total crime rates in the USA are significantly higher than in other industrialized countries. By 1998, nearly six million people - almost 3% of the adult population - were under some form of correctional supervision.2 These developments have had important consequences for criminal justice institutions. More than 1000 new prisons have been built in the United States since 19803. Today state prisons are forced to operate above their capacity. If you have a closer look at the criminal justice system of the United States you could get the impression that crime is the product and punishment is the answer. Especially conservative politicians, together with the mass media and activists in the victim rights movement advanced that the criminal justice system has become more and more punitive since the late 1960s. This development is documented at great length. In order to explain the increasing crime rates, most criminologists and sociologists have devoted their attention to examining the causes of crime. The scientific and public discussion about how to stop crime is going to be continued because there is no definitive recipe for a safer society. Nevertheless, it is undisputed that crime must be prevented. This paper deals with Megan's Law which was enacted in the United States to prevent the victimization of children. It is America's first law authorizing public notification when dangerous sex offenders are released into the community. Firstly, I will define the terms crime and crime prevention to come to a better understanding of this complex theme. Secondly, I will examine several attempts to define crime prevention. Thirdly, I will compare the arguments for and against Megan's Law in order to answer the following questions: Is this law really helpful to protect the society against sexual abuse And, if this is not the case: what could be done to prevent and even reduce sexual abuse Finally, I will make a concluding assessment and give a short summary of the themes explored in this paper.…

Seit dem Ende des Kalten Krieges spielt dabei die Idee, dass eine durch den Westen nachdrücklich geförderte Demokratisierung weltweit zu mehr Frieden führen würde, eine zunehmend wichtige Rolle. Dieser Gedanke beruht auf der weit verbreiteten These, dass Demokratien (fast) keine Kriege gegeneinander führen.Im Fokus dieser Arbeit steht die Frage, warum Demokratien eher als andere politische Systeme in der Lage sind Kooperationsprobleme zu überwinden und untereinander stabile Friedensordnungen ausbilden, die dem kantischen Ideal des 'Friedensbundes' (foedus pacificum)1 nahe kommen. Wie kann der demokratische Frieden trotz unfriedlicher Demokratien erklärt werden Zwei Erklärungsversuche sollen auf ihre Stichhaltigkeit untersucht werden: der normativ-kulturelle Ansatz und der strukturellinstitutionalistische Ansatz. Ich werde zeigen, dass obwohl beide Erklärungsversuche empirisch belegt werden können, der normativ-kulturelle Ansatz in Verbindung mit sozialkonstruktivistischen Elementen das selektive Außenverhalten von Demokratien am besten erklären kann.Die vorliegende Arbeit geht in fünf Schritten vor: Zunächst ist es notwendig den Friedensbegriff näher zu erläutern, um die anschließend dargelegten empirischen Befunde zum Verhältnis von Demokratie und Frieden bewerten zu können. Im zweiten Teil werde ich beide theoretischen Ansätze erläutern, um sie anschließend auf ihr Erklärungspotential hin zu prüfen. Im dritten Teil wird nach der Eindeutigkeit der empirischen Befunde der Wissenschaftler Zeev Maoz und Bruce Russett gefragt. Sie haben beide Ansätze gegeneinander getestet. Especially conservative politicians, together with the mass media and activists in the victim rights movement advanced that the criminal justice system has become more and more punitive since the late 1960s. This development is documented at great length. In order to explain the increasing crime rates, most criminologists and sociologists have devoted their attention to examining the causes of crime. The scientific and public discussion about how to stop crime is going to be continued because there is no definitive recipe for a safer society. Nevertheless, it is undisputed that crime must be prevented. This paper deals with Megan's Law which was enacted in the United States to prevent the victimization of children. It is America's first law authorizing public notification when dangerous sex offenders are released into the community. Firstly, I will define the terms crime and crime prevention to come to a better understanding of this complex theme. Secondly, I will examine several attempts to define crime prevention. In the main part of this paper I will try to find out the differences between Tayo and Rocky in order to explain their different ways of searching their own identity. Furthermore I will explore the sources of Tayo's selfdestructive behaviour and his problem of alienation.
