The letters, composed in the 17th century, criticise the moral teachings of the Jesuit order, highlighting the disputes within the Roman Catholic Church, particularly between the Jansenists and the Jesuits. Libri periodici, Bellinzona 1999, p. 463, no. 443, and p. 572.First edition of this apology for the "Lettres Provinciales" (1656f.), Blaise Pascal's (1623-62) famous and widely read attack on casuistry, which the Jesuit Gabriel Daniel (1649-1728) had attacked in his widely reprinted "Entretiens de Cleandre et d'Eudoxe" (1694). The church historian and theologian Dom Matthieu Petit-Didier (1659-1728), a Benedictine of St. Vannes, was appointed Bishop of Acra in 1725. Daniel, in turn, responded with his "Lettre de Mr. l'abb? *** ?° Eudoxe" (1698); the "Apologie" was placed on the Index in 1703.…
