Très rare consultation signée de 30 docteurs de la Sorbonne sur la question des "Convulsionnaires de St Médard à Paris". La liste des 30 signataires est impri…mée à la fin. Cette consultation est axée autour de douze questions : faut-il attribuer les convulsions à Dieu, si c'est par l'esprit de Dieu que les Convulsionnaires prédisent l'avenir, sont-ils pécheurs, ce qu'il faut penser de leurs discours, si leurs reliques sont légitimes, etc. etc. Elle donna lieu à de nombreuses réponses dont : "l'Examen de la Consultation au sujet des convulsions". Rappelons qu'à partir de 1731, des malades amenés sur la tombe du diacre Pâris étaient pris de tremblements, et on parla de miracles. Pour mettre fin aux attroupements que ces scènes occasionnaient, Louis XV fit fermer le cimetière de Saint-Médard en 1732. Mais cela ne suffit pas à calmer les manifestations. Les Convulsionnaires, regroupés autour de Carré de Montgeron, finirent par perdre le soutien des ecclésiastiques et des parlementaires jansénistes. A partir des années 1740, il ne subsistera que 2 ou 3 groupes qui disparaîtront à la Révolution. Pas dans Caillet ni Dorbon - Rédaction attribuée à N. Petitpied et J.V. XXI, (1), 539 pp. + folded plate (8), 184 pp. Highly interesting sammelband consisting of two works, both relating to Jesuit affairs and rarely found in the trade: 1 - The second edition of Jouvency?s ?Histoire de la Compagnie de Jésus?, which was condemned immediately after its publication in 1710 (here all the condemned parts are included) because of its critique of seqular rulers. 2 - First edition of Maigrot?s critique of Jouvency?s view on Chinese religion namely that of the The Chinese rites controversy (c.1582?1742), which wasc a religious quarrel between different Catholic orders over whether it was permissible for Chinese converts to observe traditional rites and use the Chinese terms tian and shangdi to refer to the Christian God. ?Rites Controversy debate was most intense in Fujian province where an active group of Christian literati debated with a combative Catholic bishop named Charles Maigrot de Crissey (1652?1730).European missionaries divided largely on the lines of religious orders and nationalities.The Jesuits largely supported the Chinese while the Iberian mendicants (Dominicans and Franciscans) and secular priests were less accommodating. Bishop Maigrot was born and educated in Paris and joined the Society of Foreign Missions of Paris whose missionaries competed with the Jesuits in East Asia.Although Maigrot was resistant to any change in European Christianity,he realized the practical need to study the Chinese language and culture with the assistance of two low-level Chinese literati.Although his linguistic facility remained quite limited,it gave him a false confidence in his knowledge that would eventually cause him great embarrassment. In his interpretation of the Chinese rites,Maigrot relied on the writings of a treatise written by the Dominican missionary Francisco Varo in 1672.Varo took a hard line in prohibiting Chinese Christians from performing ceremonies in honor of their ancestors and Confucius.The Christian literatus Yan Mo (baptized Paul) responded with an essay ?Distinguishing Different Forms of Sacrifice? (Bianji) that defended the practice of Christians honoring their ancestors and Confucius.Yan argued that the word for sacrifice (ji) was ambiguous and that it meant different things when it was applied to sacrifices for ancestors, the ancient sages,primary teachers,and the Christian God.He emphasized that one needed to carefully distinguish the internal meaning from the outward ritual because the meaning of ?sacrifice?varied with each case.? Second, revised and augmented edition. The Histoire de la Compagnie de Jésus, written by the P. Jouvency, was condamned immediately after its publication in 1710 because of its 'maximes pernicieuses et contraires aux droits des souverains'. The present Recueil, published by Nicolas Petit-Pied, reproduces all the condamned texts as well as numerous extra pieces dealing with the question of tyrannicide. Petitpied was a most active defender of Jansenism, fiercly opposing the Bulle Unigenitus and the Jesuits.'Nicolas Petitpied, signataire du fameux Cas de Conscience, il refusa de se rétracter, fut exilé à Beaune puis, en 1706, rejoignit Quesnel à Amsterdam. Il revint sous la Régence, mais après avoir interjeté appel de la constitution, il dut se réfugier à nouveau en Hollande ou il demeura jusqu'en 1734. Petitpied composa un grand nombre d'écrits en faveur du jansenisme dont il fut peut-être, au XVIIIe siècle, l'apologiste le plus remarquable' (Jansenisme et Politique, pp. 239-240, see also Dictionnaire de Théologie Catholique, XII, columns 1348-1351). Peignot points to the fact that the folding plate is of great rarity: 'Il faut faire attention si, dans ce volume, existe une estampe reprèsentant la fameuse pyramide élevée, en 1595 à Paris, devant la porte du palais, au sujet de l'exécrable assassinat commis en la personne de Henry IV par Jean Chatel. Souvent cette gravure est arrachée, comme dans l'exemplaire que j'ai sous les yeux; car elle sert à conserver la représentation d'un monument que la société des jésuites est parvenue à faire abolir.'.
