Hard Cover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. Reissue. 1931-39 printing of Toledano 156.1, binding 7, orange Rockwell Kent endpapers. Lacks jacket. Spine toned, hinges weakening, ink name and date on half-title page. xxii, 238, [4] pp. Translated into English by William Burnaby, introduction by C.K. Scott-Moncrieff. The Satyricon, Satyricon liber (The Book of Satyrlike Adventures), or Satyrica, is a Latin work of fiction believed to have been written by Gaius Petronius in the late 1st century AD, though the manuscript tradition identifies the author as Titus Petronius. The Satyricon is an example of Menippean satire, which is different from the formal verse satire of Juvenal or Horace. The work contains a mixture of prose and verse (commonly known as prosimetrum); serious and comic elements; and erotic and decadent passages. As with The Golden Ass by Apuleius (also called the Metamorphoses), classical scholars often describe it as a Roman novel, without necessarily implying continuity with the modern literary form. The surviving sections of the original (much longer) text detail the bizarre exploits of the narrator, Encolpius, and his (possible) slave and catamite Giton, a handsome sixteen-year-old boy. It is the second most fully preserved Roman novel, after the fully extant The Golden Ass by Apuleius, which has significant differences in style and plot. Satyricon is also regarded as useful evidence for the reconstruction of how lower classes lived during the early Roman Empire.

Hard Cover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. Reissue. Reissue. Lacks jacket. Spine faded, boards lightly soiled. Binding tight and square, pages clean, bright, and unmarked. 1934 Hard Cover. lxxxv, [1], 408, [4] pp. 8vo. Original orange cloth, blue titles. Translation attributed to Oscar Wilde, with an introduction by 'S.W.', and illustrations by Allen Lewis. Notes, bibliography, and index follow text. "Satyricon (or Satyrica) is a Latin novel, believed to have been written by Gaius Petronius, though the manuscript text of the Satyricon calls him Titus Petronius. The surviving text, a mixture of prose and poetry, details the misadventures of the narrator, Encolpius, and his lover, a handsome sixteen year old boy named Giton. Throughout the novel, Encolpius has a hard time keeping his lover faithful to him as he is constantly being enticed away by others. Encolpius' friend Ascyltus (who seems to have previously been in a relationship with Encolpius) is another major character but he disappears from the narrative half way through the surviving text. It is a rare example of a Roman novel, the only other surviving example (quite different in style and plot) being Metamorphoses written by Lucius Apuleius. It is also extremely important evidence for the reconstruction of what everyday life must have been like for the lower classes during the early Roman Empire.

Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde (16 October 1854 ¿ 30 November 1900) was an Irish poet and playwright.
