First edition of this work dedicated to nautical astronomy. Born in Avignon, the Jesuit Father Esprit Pézenas (1692-1776) first taught philosophy and mathematics in Aix-en-Provence, then went to Marseille where he taught hydrography from 1728 to 1749 and directed the observatory there. He was a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences in Paris.

Al poco tiempo los jesuitas le encomendaron reactivar el observatorio astronómico del que disponían en su ?casa? en la colina marsellesa de Saint-Croix. Hasta el cierre de la École en 1749, simultaneó ambas ocupaciones y, desde entonces y hasta su retiro forzoso con motivo de la expulsión de los jesuitas de Francia en 1763, Pezenas se dedicó en exclusiva a su actividad astronómica. Mientras fue profesor de la Escuela de Hidrografía, Pezenas publicó también una Pratique du pilotage y resolvió el problema de la determinación de las longitudes, asunto sobre el que volvería 30 años más tarde, desde su retiro en Avignon con dos memorias, Examen de la methode de la Caille pour trover les longitudes y Nouveaux essais pour déterminer les longitudes en pleine mer.Sobre las publicaciones de Pezenas existe una bibliografía elaborada por Guy Bostel(1), que, desgraciadamente, resulta insuficiente en lo que hace a estos Elemens de pilotage porque mezcla la información referida a las dos ediciones que hubo como si fuesen solo una. En efecto, de los Elemens de pilotage hubo dos ediciones. Esta primera, de 1733, y otra posterior, cuya portada sin fecha reza nouvelle edition, en un formato más pequeño, in 12, a la que Querard, por ejemplo, atribuyó erróneamente la fecha de 1732(2).Ambas ediciones son muy raras. Un ejemplar de la nouvelle edition se subastó en Paris en 2011, pero hay que remontarse a una subasta en Sothebys, en 1981, para localizar la venta de uno, como el que ofrecemos, perteneciente a la primera edición. Hay que señalar que la mayoría de los ejemplares conservados de la primera edición -también el de la Bibliotèque nationale de France- tienen solo 4 grabados. At the top of the spine minor loss of leather. Just a few milimeters. The spine is at the same level as the upper cut. Crack in the leather in the middle of the spine. Runs irregular two / thirds downwards. Edge-wear on the boards. Rubbing on the boards. Two signatures, in beautiful handwriting, on the title pages. The interior is nice and clean. Première édition, peu courante, de ce manuel d'astronomie et sur l'art de naviguer à destination des marins. Esprit Pezenas (1692-1776), astronome et mathématicien avignonnais, entra chez les Jésuites vers 1707. En 1728, il fut nommé professeur royal d'hydrographie à Marseille et en remplit les fonctions jusqu'en 1749. Dans son Astronomie des marins il prouve clairement, par des exemples nombreux et contre l'assertion de Maupertuis, que pour les problèmes nautiques la trigonométrie sphérique est bien préférable aux formules du mathématicien français.
