Illustrations: This famo…usly beautiful font was designed by the court calligrapher and personal secretary to Maximillian -- Vinzenz Rockner and cut by Jost Dienecker of Antwerp. The Theuerdank fraktur is almost "modern" and was the model for many subsequent designs. It is embellished with ornamental flourishes . Theuerdank, literally meaning "The Knight of Adventurous Thoughts", is an allegory in the form of epic verse that retells the adventures of Maximilian as he traveled to woo his future wife, Mary of Burgundy. Although she died after only five years of marriage, Maximilian regarded the years of his courtship as the ideal romantic interlude and the epitome of a knightly adventure. Mary was indeed the daughter of his own knightly hero, Charles the Bold of Burgundy. The book is largely fictitious, characterizing Maximilian as a chivalric knight in the Arthurian sense. Folio, in antique half vellum over marbled boards, with institutional gold wax seal on upper board, spine lettered in…manuscript. 125 ff; 58 pp. Very handsomely preserved and a very pleasing copy with a bit of age evidence to the binding and some mellowing to the prelims. A FINE EARLY ISSUE OF ONE OF THE MOST SPECTACULAR GERMAN ILLUSTRATED BOOKS OF THE SIXTEENTH CENTURY. The poem is an allegorical chivalric romance celebrating the exploits of the hero (Emperor Maximilian I) in overcoming a series of obstacles in his journey to seek the hand in marriage of Queen Ernreich (Mary of Burgundy) in 1478. Parts of the text were composed by Maximilian himself, who had made the first drafts in 1505-8; his private secretary Melchior Pfintzing oversaw completion of the poem and edited the work. Other contributors were Maximilian's Silberkammerer Sigismund von Dietrichstein and his Geheimsekretar Marx Treitzsauerwein; Johann Stabius and the humanist Conrad Peutinger worked with the printers and artists. A contract survives dated 17 December 1508, in which Maximilian awarded the Augsburg printer Schonsperger, a specialist in the production of German illustrated books, the post of Imperial printer for life, at an annual salary of 10 florins. This printing contains additional preliminary material by Matthaus Schultes and a 58 page work on Maximilian I.

It is assumed that Maximillian himself had a considerable share in the composition, and may have made the first drafts in 1508-08. The finishing and general editing was then undertaken by Maximilian's private secretary M. Pfuntzing.

First Edition of one of the most celebrated German woodcut books of the sixteenth century. This allegorical poem of knight-errantry celebrates the heroic exploits of the Emperor Maximilian I [1459-1519] on his journey to marry Mary, duchess of Burgundy. A key to the names of the characters and an index are given on the last eight leaves; these are often wanting. After the Emperor had written several initial drafts with the assistance of Marx Treitzsauerwein, the completion and final editing of the text were entrusted to his private secretary Melchior Pfintzing, and the typographical execution to Augsburg printer Johann Schönsperger, who apparently was brought to Nuremberg for this specific purpose as it is the only one of his books with a Nuremberg imprint. Five years were spent preparing the work for printing, which was done at the Emperor's expense. Special types were designed for the book by Vincenz Röckner, court calligrapher, and cut by Hieronymus Andrae. They depart from the usual severe gothic type-faces, and are ornamented with large flourishes in imitation of the best current calligraphic styles. The one hundred and eighteen large woodcuts, among the finest in early German book illustration, were designed by some of the most notable contemporary artists: Leonhard Beck (77), Hans Schäufelein (20), Hans Burgkmair (13), Erhard Schön (3), Wolfgang Traut (2), the Master NH (1), Hans Weiditz (1: doubtful), and Jörg Breu I (1). The same cuts were used in later editions but the finest and darkest impressions are found in the first. Among them are depictions of battles and tournaments, and scenes of hunting (bears, boers, chamois, &c.). Fairfax-Murray notes that this edition is to be considered as a privately printed book, not intended for sale, with no copies passing out of the possession of Maximilian before his death in 1519. ".the whole stock of copies lay in six chests at Augsburg until March 1526, when the Archduke Ferdinand decided to distribute, through Marx Treitzsauerwein, the contents of five of the chests to different subjects as memorials of the late Emperor. Die Schrift des Werkes setzte sich unter dem Namen Theuerdank im 16. Jahrhundert für längere Zeit durch und wird heute als Vorstufe der Fraktur angesehen. Der Theuerdank stellt eine der wichtigsten Quellen für die Kenntnis der ritterlichen Gebräuche und Sitten sowie von Turnieren und Festlichkeiten im ausgehenden Mittelalter dar. - Der eigentliche Text ist bis auf das Blatt P4 (und das leere Blatt P5) vollständig.
