Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book is a comprehensive collection of poems by the author, thematically centered on scenes in nature and domestic life. As such, it belongs to the classic subgenres of nature poetry and hearthside poetry that have provided inspiration for poets for centuries. However, the author's use of vivid imagery and a structured format brings new life to these time-tested genres. Through these poems, the reader is invited to reflect on the human condition, the changing seasons, the beauty of the natural world, and the enduring comfort of family and domestic bliss. This book, a celebration of life in all its forms, will appeal to a wide swath of readers from lovers of classic poetry to those who enjoy the comforts of home. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Green Cloth. Condizione: Fair. No Jacket. Complete. viii, (7)-407, (1, ads), (2, blank) pages. Frontispiece and engraved title, with tissue guard, and 19 plates inserted, 2 illustrations in text. (= 408 pages). 192 x 135 mm. Some signatures are loose or detached in the binding which is loose. Hence the low price for this book. Original green pictorial cloth stamped in blind, spine gilt lettered. Very top and very bottom of spine has some wear. Phelps was an American clergyman whose congregation gave him the gift of a trip to the Holy Land , and while he was at it he took a year for the Grand Tour of Europe and thence into Palestine via Malta and Egypt. Lebanon, Turkey, Greece, and much of Western Europe were visited. First edition was in 1862. The front free endpaper has a faint inscription: To mother from Alvin. August 8th 1866. On the front pastedown is a signature in pencil by a man who was either very old or very sick: "Rev. Eastwood" The penciled name at the top right of the flyleaf is Emeline Lewis. She is likely 1 of these: 1. Emeline Lewis of Boston, Massachusetts alumni records from Wesleyan University note a Miss Emeline Lewis of Boston, MA, who married Professor Benjamin Thomas Hoyt in August 1853. Given the book's religious, educational theme, a well-educated woman of this name from Boston fits the profile of its typical mid-19th-century audience perfectly. 2. Emeline Lewis of New York Genealogical archives list an Emeline Lewis (1821-1904) who spent her life in the Queens/Nassau region of Long Island, New York. Additionally, court property records from nearby Ontario County, NY, document active legal transactions for an Emeline Lewis around the 1880s. 3. Emeline Lewis (Enslaved & Liberated Worker) Historical museum records from Glencoe Mansion detail the life of an African American woman named Emeline Lewis. Born into slavery, she was given as a wedding gift to Confederate General Gabriel C. Wharton and his wife Nannie in 1863. Following emancipation, Emeline and her husband William Lewis learned to read and write, remaining with the family as paid staff for two decades. Given the immense popularity of Holy Land travelogues among both Northern and Southern households during the reconstruction period, her time line matches the book's 1864 printing precisely. Handwritten: "To Mother / from Alvin / Aug. 8th 1866." The Left Page (Front Pastedown): The shaky, faint pencil writing in the top-left area reads: "Rev. Eastwood" The shaky nature of the pencil "Rev. Eastwood" signature is indicative of advanced age, frailty, or a severe tremor. 1. The Father: Rev. Eastwood (an elderly or ailing minister by 1866). 2. The Son: Alvin Eastwood If Emilia is a Sister: She would be another child of Rev. Eastwood and Hannah, making her Alvin's sister. When a person writes "To Mother from Alvin," it dictates a direct maternal line. However, because Rev. Eastwood signed the exact same book on the opposite page, the volume clearly stayed within the same immediate household or was returned to the family estate. Given his title, "Rev. Eastwood" is highly likely the husband of "Mother" and the father of Alvin. If he was elderly or frail when he signed it, he may have added his name to the family library copy later in life, or inherited it back if his wife predeceased him. [handwritten pencil inscription found on the rear endpaper:] Ch. Nativity it was erected in the year 327 By the empress helena mother of Constantine. There are also a couple of faintly penciled letters in the upper right corner, which look like "Ex" . The Church of the Nativity was indeed started under the orders of Emperor Constantine and his mother, Helena, following her pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Construction began around 325-326 AD, and it was dedicated in 339 AD. While the pencil strokes here are slightly more relaxed than the tight signature on the front flyleaf, they share striking similarities with the handwriting of Emeline Lewis. The notes were almost certainly made by Emeline.…
