Heavily illustrated with black-and-white plates and colour figures charting a century of original graphic book art. A Near Fine copy—the cloth binding is clean, fresh, tight, and square with solid corners and immaculate internal pages. Lacks a dust jacket, but has a removeable plastic cover fitted. Loosely laid in is a pristine companion colour illustration plate matching the Title of the Book. A remarkable dual-provenance association copy, featuring successive private bookplates to the front pastedown: the first is the legendary wood-engraved magpie design belonging to prominent New York Grolier Club collector and editor Robert Elwell—cut specifically for him by famed British designer Reynolds Stone (bearing his RS monogram)—positioned directly alongside the scarce early black-and-white personal bookplate (also designed by Reynolds Stone) of British printing historian David Chambers. An unblemished monumental reference cornerstone. NOTE: The Story Behind the Matching bookplate Designs - David Chambers was not just an admirer of Reynolds Stone; he was his definitive bibliographer. In the winter of 1977, Chambers edited and published the authoritative Reynolds Stone Checklist inside the Private Libraries Association Journal. Because of their close working relationship and shared passion for wood-engraved lettering, Reynolds Stone custom-cut the Chambers heraldic/calligraphic bookplate using the exact same distinct, clean engraving style he created for Robert Elwell. When Chambers first received the wooden block from Stone, he initially had a small batch printed on standard black-and-white paper stock. However, as his library grew to several thousand volumes, he decided to give his books a highly distinct, recognizable house style. He switched his print run to a terracotta/tan-coloured paper, while keeping Stone's elegant visual frame exactly the same. Finding his rare, early black-and-white print sitting right next to Elwell's magpie print is an absolute masterclass in 20th-century wood-engraving history.
