Yet Adorno's own philosophy of language has not yet been fully and systematically examined in its own right. Philip Hogh argues that it was in fact the linguistic turn in critical theory that prevented a thorough analysis of Adorno's philosophy of language. Here he reconstructs Adorno's philosophy of language and presents it as a coherent theory that demands to be understood as an important contribution to contemporary linguistic philosophy. By analysing all the key concepts in Adorno's thought (subjectivity, epistemology, social theory and aesthetics), and comparing them to Robert Brandom's material inferentialism, John McDowell's theory of conceptual experience and Jürgen Habermas' theory of communicative action, this book presents Adorno's theory as an important contribution to contemporary philosophy of language in its own right.

Dabei wird in einer umfassenden, detaillierten und in der Sache unvorein-genommenen Weise das Vorurteil korrigiert, Adornos Philosophie sei eine letzte Form der seit dem linguistic turn überholten Bewusstseinsphilosophie. Zunächst wird die Rolle beleuchtet, die der Sprache in der naturgeschichtlichen Genese von Subjektivität zukommt, worin die Sprache als eine zweite Natur bestimmt wird, die den menschlichen Weltzugang sowohl grundsätzlich ermöglicht als auch auf eine je spezifisch historische und soziale Weise entfaltet und zugleich einschränkt. Dieses dialektische Ver-hältnis von Freiheit und Herrschaft, von Befreiung und Verschließung, von dem die Sprache bestimmt ist, wird anhand von Adornos Theorie des Namens, des Begriffs, des Urteils, der Konstellation, der Sprache der Kunst und der gesellschaftlichen Kommunikation aus-differenziert. Erstmalig liefert das Buch so eine systematische Semantik Adornos, die sprachlichen Gehalt sowohl durch das inferentielle Verhältnis von Begriffen und Sätzen zueinander als auch durch die Beziehung von Begriffen und Sätzen auf die nichtsprachliche gesellschaftliche Realität bestimmt sieht. Indem Adornos Gedanken stets in der Diskussion mit gegenwärtigen sprach-philosophischen Ansätzen entwickelt werden - wobei der materiale Inferentialismus Robert Brandoms, John McDowells Theorie begrifflicher Erfahrung und die Diskursethik von Jürgen Habermas die wichtigsten Bezugspunkte darstellen -, gelingt dem Buch eine Pointierung einer aktuellen kritischen Theorie der Sprache im Anschluss an Adorno, die vorschlägt, die Bestimmtheit der Sprache durch kritikwürdige soziale Verhältnisse gerade dann ernst zu nehmen, wenn am befreienden Potential der Sprache festgehalten werden soll.
