Crucially, this is a vital foundation-tier association copy showing the origins of David Chambers' personal collecting library, featuring his pristine early youth signature to the top of the front cover verso: 'David J. Chambers 1st May 1948.' A museum-grade typographical rarity with flawless book-collecting pedigree. NB: David Chambers was the Honorary Publications Secretary for the Private Libraries Association, and a British historian of note. This historic 1945 catalogue was published by the newly formed Arts Council of Great Britain (previously C.E.M.A.) to re-introduce the British public to the magnificent, resilient survival of French graphic avant-garde publishing. Featuring a monumental preface by the legendary economist and arts patron John Maynard Keynes, the text chronicles how French printmakers, text layout artists, and painters courageously kept the livre d'artiste movement alive under the crushing constraints of the Nazi occupation.
