An einen namentlich nicht genannten Adressaten: "Nachdem ich von Ihren ohne Zweifel sehr genauen Messungen [.] mir jetzt eingehender Kenntniß habe verschaffen können, muß ich bedauern, daß Sie, wie es scheint, nicht vor dem Beginn dieser Arbeit Einsicht von den denjenigen Acten unsrer Commission erhal…ten haben [.]". - Ludwig Philipp von Seidel "leistete wichtige Beiträge zur Analysis (Kettenbrüche, gleichmäßige Konvergenz von Funktionenreihen), zur Matrizenrechnung (Gauß-Seidel-Algorithmus zur Lösung von Gleichungssystemen) und zur Anwendung der Wahrscheinlichkeitsrechnung in der Astronomie. 1855/56 formulierte er die Abbildungsfehlertheorie 3. Ordnung. Außerdem bestimmte Seidel den Brechungsindex verschiedener Stoffe und führte mit Carl August von Steinheil die ersten photometrischen Messungen an Sternen durch (1859-62). Seidel befaßte sich auch mit der Anwendung der Wahrscheinlichkeitsrechnung in der Astronomie und der Medizin. Das nach Seidel benannte Seidelsche Gebiet ist jener Bereich um die optische Achse eines abbildenden optischen Systems, der an das paraxiale Gebiet anschließt" (DBE).
