Philipp Scharwenka studierte an der Kullakschen Akademie in Berlin, wo er später auch unterrichtete, und trat 1874 mit eigenen Kompositionen hervor. 1881 wurde Scharwenka Kompositionslehrer am Konservatorium seines Bruders Xaver, war 1891/92 an der ebenfalls von diesem gegründeten Musikschule in New York tätig und wurde nach seiner Rückkehr nach Berlin Mitdirektor des Scharwenka-Konservatoriums. Seit 1902 Professor, wurde er 1911 Senator der Berliner Akademie der Künste. Scharwenka komponierte Symphonien, symphonische Dichtungen, Chorwerke sowie zahlreiche Kammermusikwerke" (DBE).
