Im Gegensatz zu den zahlreichen bereits existierenden Publikationen ist das Ziel dieser Magisterarbeit, die Entwicklung des deutschen Philhellenismus vom Anfang des 18. Jh. bis zur Gründung des griechischen Staates im Jahre 1830 darzustellen. In einem ersten Teil wurde daher der Frage nachgegangen, welche Faktoren die Griechen zu ihrem Unabhängigkeitskrieg motivierten, und welche Ereignisse die griechische Revolution überhaupt ermöglichten. Anschließend wurde im zweiten Teil eine zusammenfassende historische Betrachtung des Philhellenismus bis zum Ende des 18. Jh. präsentiert. Zudem wurde ein erster genereller Überblick über die philhellenischen Tendenzen in Europa gegeben, sowie die die Haltung Europas gegenüber der 'Griechischen Sache' aufgezeigt. Den grundlegenden Teil der Arbeit bildete die ausführliche Darstellung des deutschen Philhellenismus innerhalb des oben genannten Zeitraumes. Der methodische Schwerpunkt lag dabei im Aufzeigen der deutsch-griechischen Beziehungen vor dem Beginn des griechischen Befreiungskampfes. In diesem Zusammenhang wurden auch die verschiedenen Militär- und Hilfsprojekte sowie die Rolle der deutschen Presse mit einbezogen, um damit dem Leser ein vollständiges Bild vermitteln zu können. Zwar war der deutsche Philhellenismus eine staatenübergreifende soziale Bewegung, die alle Schichten der Bevölkerung mobilisierte, jedoch kann rückblickend seine unterstützende Wirkung für die unterdrückten Griechen als nur mäßig bezeichnet werden. Die Gründe dafür liegen sowohl in der mangelnden Akzeptanz der angebotenen Hilfe, als auch in der ineffizienten Verwendung der Spendengelder, die größtenteils für die Verschiffung und Versorgung der Expeditionstruppen verwendet wurden. In den deutschen Staaten hingegen leitete der Philhellenismus eine neue Ära ein, die besonders auf dem Gebiet der sozialen Bewegungen und der Entwicklung des Pressewesens ihren Ausdruck fand.
