This copy has some very mild spotting to the half title but the text block and plates are unmarked The unclipped dust wrapper is also in fine condition and has been laminated. Thomas Hosmer Shepherd (1792-1864) was a topographical watercolour artist well known for his architectural paintings. Thomas was the brother of topographical artist George "Sidney" Shepherd, Thomas was employed to illustrate architecture in London, and later Edinburgh, Bath and Bristol. His paintings were the basis for steel engravings in many books (see bibliography). Shepherd's work, mostly topographical, is characterized by an attention to detail, along with lifelike scenes that contained people, carriages and horses. His first acclaim came with Metropolitan improvements, a publication of modern London architecture commissioned by Jones & Co. He worked mostly for Frederick Crace, who employed him to paint old London buildings prior to their demolition, with much of the work surviving in the Crace collection at the British Museum. There is a rust mark to the front paste-down and the front endpaper caused by a staple to the supplement. There is a little toning to the front page of this supplement. The book supported by numerous photographic reproductions after the artists. The jacket has not been price-clipped. There is slight fading to the spine of the jacket and light foxing to the verso of the jacket. A signed copy complete with the considerably rarer supplement.…
