Although Harper's copyright page "G-E" letter code corresponds to July 1955 the book was evidently not released until August 24, 1955 per a Harper's review slip in a past inventory copy. A United States Navy World War II veteran and 1943 graduate of Mississippi State University, Phillips completed a master's degree in creative writing at the University of Alabama under the tutelage of renowned instructor Hudson Strode where his thesis evolved into this first novel which is among the earliest in the genre of American overtly themed gay literature and, in further challenging period stereotypes, being notable in both its Deep South setting and being by a southern author.
