No Binding. Condizione: Good. 1st Edition. This is part of a huge work detailing the architecture and monuments of San Marco in Venice. There is an outer folder dated 1885 (and labelled Portafoglio V), which contains a folder dated 1886 with a label stating there are 56 plates within. In fact there appear to be 58 plates. The ti…tle page is dated 1881. So its all a bit confusing, but in short there are 58 plates all in photogravure (heliotype or eliotipia in the Italian), mounted on blindstamped card mounts with stencilled numbering. Many of the plates have multiple images. Ex-library, with labels to the folder and each plate has a red ink stamp in the margin, occasionally making its way onto the image. But still a wonderful collection of images.

This is a second part of Ongania's iconographical description of the San Marco Basilica dealing with the sculpture of the basilica. It comprises 12 instalments (numbered I -> XII), containing in all 188 plates. All the plates of the instalments are here. The complete publication, containing 425 photo engravings was the first serious iconographical study of the Basilica. It was also a milestone in Italy for the use of photo engraving as a mean to illustrate studies on architectural monuments. (See P. Printed in 500 copies of which 190 on Hollande paper. This is copy 52 on Hollande printed for Monsieur Charles Mannheim. (His art collection was sold in 1898). The plates are signed in print ; '' Héliogravure P. ( Paul) Dujardin - Imp. (Imprimerie) Eudes ''. Kept in a modern cloth box. The photogravures represent art objects from Lyonese public and private collections; sculpture, furniture, embroidery, textile, weaponry. Very early example of a book illustrated with photogravures by the Parisian photographer Paul Dujardin. J.B. Giraud states in the introduction of his publication that he strived for the best quality in reproduction ; ''.nous avons mis à contribution les procédés les plus nouveaux et les plus parfaits de reproduction. Le procédé d'héliogravure Dujardin que nous avons employé.''. We could not establish which photo reproduction process A. Dujardin (brother of Paul Dujardin ?) used for this early example of photogravure ; and if it had any relation with the Karel Klic [Klietch] process allegedly invented on New Year's eve 1877.
