The original green cloth, with beige cloth on the spine, is in excellent shape; corners are square, black-lettering is bold on the spine, and a cross-in-blind adorns the upper board. The interior is fresh, crisp, and completely clean. The original dust jacket has its price ($2.75) but shows some wear, with a sunned spine and several chips; one closed tear at the spine base. [Please see my five images of the actual book.] There is a picture of Pieper on the rear panel with a blurb from T.S. Eliot: "His sentences are admirably constructed, his ideas expressed with the maximum clarity. During his time in Korea, Gale developed into the foremost Western scholar of Korean history, language, and literature, completing the first translation of Korean literature into a Western language, the first translation of English literature into Korean, and the first comprehensive Korean-English dictionary. In addition to these translations, the typescripts entitled Pen Pictures of Old Korea (ca. 1910) and Old Corea (ca. 1925), each presented here with introductory essays, contain Gale's observations of various cultural artifacts, behaviours, and practices. Gale lived in Korea during a tumultuous and transformative period that witnessed the transition of the country from a "hermit" suzerain kingdom to an independent empire, and finally to a colonial possession of Japan. Pen Pictures of Old Korea and Old Corea preserve what Gale viewed as inevitably fated for extinction. This realization imbues his writings with a sense of ambivalence towards the "passing" of traditional Korea - owing to the conflict between his profound admiration for pre-modern Korean culture and his Western missionary identity, which demanded that the country adapt to a modern, Christian world.

Er ist Gründer und Vorsitzender des Aufsichtsrates der Dortmunder adesso AG. Das Unternehmen, das zur Zeit gut 180 Mitarbeiter beschäftigt, ist auf strategische und technologische Beratungsdienstleistungen im Umfeld e-Business mit Schwerpunkt in der Finanzwirtschaft spezialisiert. Carsten Röttgers und Daniel Pieper arbeiten in der Software Entwicklung der adesso AG und beschäftigen sich seit dem Aufkommen des MDA Begriffes vor ungefähr 2 Jahren mit der praktischen Umsetzung dieses vielversprechenden Ansatzes in Software-Entwicklungsprojekten auf Basis von Open-Source Technologien. Zuvor haben sie langjährige Erfahrung in der Entwicklung von Unternehmensanwendungen, vornehmlich auf Basis der J2EE sammeln können. Die Autoren liefern eine gelungene Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema Modellgetriebene Software-Entwicklung im Sinne der MDA. Das Buch ist in zwei Teile gegliedert, zunächst geht es um die TheorieMotivation und Einordnung des Ansatzes in den Kontext des Modernen Software-Engineerings werden betrachtet. Danach werden die Themen 'Modellierung' und 'Transformation' erörtert. Es folgt ein Kapitel über die Anwendung der MDA aus methodischer Sicht ('Koordination und Kombination' genannt). Im zweiten Teil wird die zuvor erarbeitete Theorie schließlich in die Praxis umgesetzt. Dabei stützt man sich auf moderne Technologien wie etwa Eclipse, EMF, jBPM, Beehive, Hibernate. Zwei Dinge haben mir an dem Buch besonders gut gefallenZum einen liest sich das Buch sehr flüssig. Das macht sich gerade im ersten Teil bemerkbarkeine Spur von spröder Theorie, die grundsätzliche Idee hinter der MDA erschließt sich bereits nach kurzer Zeit. Und zum anderen hat mich erfreut, daß die Autoren den eigentlichen Standard von der OMG detailliert beleuchtet haben und nicht krampfhaft versuchen diverse weitere Begriffe zu motivieren, wie in einigen anderen Bücher zu diesem Thema geschehen (Stichwort MDSD).
