Hardcover. Condizione: Fair. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fair. In the romantic opening chapters two lovely, warm-hearted, and innocent young girls are discovered against the background of Jane Austen's nineteenth-century England, that wealthy and fashionable England which now it takes something of a magic touch to evoke. You are irresistibly drawn to these artless heroines; you want them to be happy; they are so charming and so innocent. But as you fall more and more in love with them there suddenly appear premonitions of danger, and with surpassing skill the story changes from swift-flowing romance to a tale of terror and horror worthy of Poe. The ultimate triumph of virtue and dignity, the overthrow of one of the most murderously evil forces in literature, make this an enthralling and satisfying tale. Condition: Boards have some shelf wear, square corners some bumping to head and foot of spine. Pages are clean with light age tanning, some foxing to page edges. Dust jacket has light edge chipping, 1 tear on back toward top.

Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 304 pages. The author more frequently used the pen name Isak Dinesen. This is the first English (American) edition of novel - set in 19th-century England - published in Danish as Gengældelsens Veje (Ways of Retaliation) in 1944 during the Nazi occupation of Denmark. Dinesen acknowledged her authorship only a decade later, stating that she had written the novel merely "to amuse myself"; but the English editions have an epigraph (impossible to publish in the Danish version" from within the book: "You serious people must not be too hard on human beings for what they choose to amuse themselves with when they are shut up as in a prison and not even allowed to say that they are prisoners. If I do not soon get a little bit of fun, I shall die." 8vo, beige cloth with knockout lettering on black inlaid box on spine, gilt drawing on front, decorative black border on front board, light shelf wear, boards soiled especially the spine and bleached evidently from a past cleaning attempt along the fore-edge; edges, end papers and page margins age-toned. Former owner's name and bookstore price in pencil on ffep, text pages unmarked.
