Il s'agissait selon lui d'une sorte d'angine couenneuse qui tuait par suffocation en raison du développement d'une fausse membrane. Bien complet de l'Addition supplémentaire de 28 pages, comportant l'errata et la Notice sur l'emploi thérapeutique de l'alun dans la diphtérie. Pierre Bretonneau fut agent de santé publique à Chenonceaux, puis chirurgien en chef à l'hôpital de Tours. En 1815, il réalise sa thèse de doctorat sur l'utilité de la compression et du bandage de Theden dans les inflammations idiopathiques de la peau (Paris, 1815).
