Nach seiner Genesung schrieb der Autor, von seinem Therapeuten ermuntert, seine Erfahrungen nieder, um sich selbst zu entlasten, aber auch um mehr Verständnis für eine der qualvollsten menschlichen Erkrankungen zu wecken. Sein Bericht ist erschreckend und faszinierend zugleich, zum einen weil der Autor es wagt, sich und anderen Schwächen und Schwierigkeiten einzugestehen, die man gemeinhin verschweigt, zum anderen weil er sich auch in den grauenhaftesten Panikanfällen seine in Jahrzehnten geschulte Beobachtungsgabe bewahren kann.
