Pike's classic study of English intonation, the first volume in the University of Michigan Publications in Linguistics and a foundational work of American structural linguistics. Drawing on his work for the English Language Institute at Michigan (the study expands and revises material from his Pronunciation, volume one of An Intensive Course in English for Latin-American Students), Pike sets out a systematic analysis of American English intonation in terms of four relative pitch levels and contour points, with extensive transcribed examples and a method for teaching intonation to non-native speakers. Long a standard reference in linguistics and language teaching. This is the seventh printing (1958) of the 1945 first edition, in the original printed wrappers.
