Barbatul este Dinu Pillat (19211975), cap de lot, alaturi de Constantin Noica, in sinistrul proces inscenat de Securitate, la sfarsitul anilor 50, unui grup de intelectuali socotiti vinovati de uneltire contra ordinii sociale; iar dincolo de acest dureros episod biografic, un remarcabil romancier, critic si istoric literar. Femeia este Nelli Filipescu (19212005), colega de facultate la Litere si Filozofie cu Dinu Pillat si, din 1944, sotia lui; implinita profesional ca editoare, memorialista si cercetatoare in istoria artei. Dupa moartea lui Nelli, Monica Pillat-Saulescu, ea insasi scriitoare, a reconstituit tulburatorul dialog epistolar al parintilor sai, completandu-l cu pagini de corespondenta adiacente, fotografii si facsimile. Misterul acestei iubiri nu se elucideaza nici in moarte, precum iubirea dintre Romeo si Julieta; nici in violenta, precum iubirea manipulata perfid dintre Othello si Desdemona; nici in asumarea unei sarcini istorice marete, precum iubirea dintre Enea si Didona; nici in insondabilul mister al esecului, precum iubirea dintre Marie Arnoux si Frédéric Moreau. Iubirea dintre Nelli si Dinu se elucideaza in misterul promisiunii «Eu voi fi cu tine» si «Iata, Eu vin curand» Cartea iubirii lui Nelli si Dinu este, prin adancimea ei neverosimila, o carte despre Judecata de Apoi (cartea pierduta a lui Dinu Pillat se numea Asteptand ceasul de apoi), o carte despre ce ramane din noi dupa ce moartea ori rautatea oamenilor ne-a smuls dintre vii.
