Wraps. Condizione: Fair. George Shiras III (Photographer), Stanley E. Piper (illustratore). [4],403-492, [and 18 pages of advertisements] Illustrations. Cover is worn and partially separated. Portions of spine at top and bottom missing. National Geographic is the official magazine of the National Geographic Society. It has been published continuously since its first issue in 1888, nine months after the Society itself was founded. It primarily contains articles about geography, history, and world culture. The magazine is known for its extensive use of dramatic photographs. The magazine is published monthly, and additional map supplements are also included with subscriptions. On occasion, special editions of the magazine are issued. The first issue of National Geographic Magazine was published on September 22, 1888, nine months after the Society was founded. Starting with its January 1905 publication of several full-page pictures of Tibet in 1900-1901, the magazine changed from being a text-oriented publication closer to a scientific journal to featuring extensive pictorial content, and became well known for this style. This issue includes articles on The Call of the West by C. J. Blanchard (with 21 illustrations) [taken from an Address to the National Geographic Society, April 2, 1909], Camps and cruises of an Ornithologist by George Shiras (with 30 illustrations, In Beautiful Delecarlia by Lillian Gore (with 13 illustrations), A Plague of Mice (with 7 illustrations) [this is abstracted from The Nevada Mouse Plague of 1907-08 by Stanley E. Piper in Farmer's Bulletin 352 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture], The National Geographic Society, and Greely's Handbook of Alaska. C. J. Blanchard was the chief statistician of the U.S. Reclamation Service.George Shiras, III (January 1, 1859 - March 24, 1942) was a U.S. Representative from the state of Pennsylvania. He graduated from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, in 1881 and from the law department of Yale College in 1883. He was admitted to the Connecticut and Pennsylvania bars in 1883 and commenced the practice of his profession in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He served as a member of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives in 1889 and 1890. Shiras was elected as an Independent Republican to the Fifty-eighth Congress. He did not seek renomination in 1904. Both during and after his time in Congress, Shiras participated in biological research and photography, to the extent that National Geographic has described him as "the father of wildlife photography" for his early use of camera traps and flash photography. He was attributed with the discovery of a moose subspecies in Yellowstone National Park, which was named Alces alces shirasi, Shiras's Moose. In 1935, Shiras published Hunting Wild Life with Camera and Flashlight : a Record of Sixty Five years' Visits to the Woods and Waters of North America a two-volume set of over 960 of his wildlife photographs including some of the earliest 'flash' photography.Dalarna (Dalecarlia), is a historical province or landskap in central Sweden. The word "Dalarna" means "the dales" (valleys). The area is a popular vacation destination for Swedes from the south, who often travel there to relax during summer vacations, drawn by good fishing lakes, beautiful campgrounds, and deep forests. In mid-June, summerfest celebrations and dances are held in many of the small villages and, of course, in the larger cities. Dalarna is a region full of historical associations, possessing strong local characteristics in respect of its products, and especially of its people. In the western district Lima, some people in villages speak a traditional dialect, Dalecarlian, while in Älvdalen, they speak a dialect closer to Norwegian, Elfdalian. Historically, the people of Dalecarlia - called Dalecarlians, or Dalesmen - are famous for their love of independence. Presumed First Edition/First Printing thus.

[52] pp.; 53 x 28.5 cm.; loose leaves; black-and-white; edition size 2000; unsigned and unnumbered; offset-printed A tabloid style artists' project based on notions of exchange between Huebler and fifty artists. Text from cover: "50 signed original copies of this statement, (priced at $150 each), will constitute the only from of this piece for an indeterminate period of time. When the entire edition has been sold, presumably to 50 different 'owners', the net proceeds resulting from its sale will be used to structure and execute its final destiny." Text from first interior page: "After a period of months had passed no collector had purchased PART I of this work so it was re-designed in the following way: fifty people, not necessarily artists, were asked to accept the statement that constituted PART I in exchange for 'something of yours that you value as being worth $150.' As no 'net proceeds' resulted from the exchanges the 'final destiny' of the piece takes the form of the publication 'of all documents that accumulate as a result of its completion.' An edition of 2,000 newspaper type publications has been printed in order to bring the information concerning this work to a more general and larger audience at a very low cost." Incorporates the works of Eleanor Antin, Cazolari, Salvo, Alighiero Boetti, Hanne Darboven, Tim Zuck, David Askevold, John Goodyear, Lawrence Weiner, Roger Mazurquil, Charles Harper, Saul Ostrow, David Blume, Les Levine, Jack Burnham, Robert MacDonald, Carolyn Kite, Braco Dimitrijevic, John Pearson, Lucy Lippard, Tadashi Maeyama, Knimsa Kuriyama, Shyoji Kaneko, Kodo Tanaqua, Toshiyuki Sunohara, Hideharu Sato, Jum Mizukami, Hiroshi Kawatsu, Yutaka Matsuzawa, Gerald Ferguson, Boezem, Stanley Brouwn, Jan Dibbets, Adriaan Van Ravesteijn, Donald Burgy, Robert Barry, Christopher Cook, Edward Ruscha, Robert Cumming, Agnes Denes, Adrian Piper, Hans Haacke, John Baldessari, Sol LeWitt, Konrad Fischer, Daniel Buren, Gilbert & George, Bernd & Hilla Becher, Jaroslaw Kozlowski, Richards Jarden.
