Zudem leistete Marcello Pirani richtungsweisende Pionierarbeiten auf dem Gebiet der Gasentladung. Von 1919 bis 1…936 arbeitete Marcello Pirani bei der neu gegründeten Osram-Gesellschaft als Leiter der Wissenschaftlich-Technischen Dienststelle für elektrische Beleuchtung. Er forschte an Glühlampen und der Herstellung von Leuchtstoffröhren und Natriumdampflampen. 1930 erschien sein Buch über Wärmeerzeugung auf elektrischem Wege.

Pirani (Berlin) Die groBen Vorzuge der elektrischen Erhitzung wurden schon fruh zeitig erkannt und haben die Erfinder und Konstrukteure aller Volker veranlaBt, unablassig an der Ausbildung elektrothermischer Methoden zu arbeiten. DemgemaB h…at die Entwicklung der Elektrothermie sich mit gewaltiger Schnelligkeit vollzogen. Man ersieht dies am besten aus folgenden Daten: 1m Jahre 1849 prufte DESPRETZ im Laufe seiner Versuche uber die Herstellung von kunstlichen Diamanten das Verhalten einer aus Zuckerkohle hergestellten kleinen Retorte von 15 mm Durchmesser bei der Temperatur eines Lichtbogens, den er im Innern dieser Retorte auf einen spitzen Kohlenstab uberspringen lieB. Die Retorte selbst bildete den positiven Pol. Aus der Zuckerkohle war an den dem Licht bogen am meisten ausgesetzten Stellen Graphit geworden. Dieser Gra phit hatte tropfenahnliche Formen angenommen, so daB DESPRETZ annahm, der Kohlenstoff sei geschmolzen. Es gelang DESPRETZ auch, im Lichtbogen kleine Metallmengen, z. B. 250 g Platin, in wenigen Minuten zu schmelzen. Jedoch bewirkten diese Resultate vor allem wegen der zur damaligen Zeit vorhandenen sehr unvollkommenen tech nischen Mittel zur Erzeugung des elektrischen Stromes (DESPRETZ ver wandte Bunden-Elemente) keine weitere Entwicklung, und es ware eine Utopie gewesen, wenn man damals schon an die technische Verwend barkeit eines elektrothermischen Verfahrens gedacht hatte, Erst etwa 10 Jahre nach der Erfindung der Dynamomaschine er hielt in den Jahren 1878 und 1879 OR. W. SIEMENS in London die englischen Patente 4208 und 2110, in welchen die Schmelzung von Me tallen mittels des elektrischen I . . ichtbogens beschrieben wurde.

At the time this letter was sent, Pirani was "Direktor der Studiengesellschaft fur Elecktrische Beleuchtung" at the Osram Company. Text in German.
