The Myth of the Jacobite Clans exposes the depth of myth and misrepresentation from which Scotland and the Jacobite cause have suffered over the last 250 years.Award-winning author Murray Pittock demonstrates that British history has marginalised the facts about Jacobitism because they threatened long-standing views of a unified Britain. Offering extensive detail of town-by-town recruitment to Bonnie Prince Charlie's army, his challenging book reveals that, far from being a Catholic and Highland dynastic rebellion, the '45 had the dimensions of a national rising. And as the account unfolds, a lost history is uncovered, and with it a lost Scotland. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

James Boswell (1740-95) has gone down in history as the biographer of Samuel Johnson, a sexual adventurer, a toadying Scot, and as a writer who typified the divided consciousness of the Scottish eighteenth century. Before the discovery and (since 1950) publication of his private papers, critics often saw him as a bit of a fool, whose achievement was primarily that of being lucky enough to be the friend and amanuensis of the most famous Englishman of his day. More recently, the stature of Boswell s achievement and his complexity as a writer have been better appreciated, but without adequate understanding of his role as a specifically Scottish author and thinker of the age of Enlightenment: in particular, his anxious critique of Humean scepticism is discussed here. This study examines, through a close reading of both published and unpublished materials, how Boswell deliberately sets out to write ambiguously about himself and the major events of his time; how, far from echoing Johnson, Boswell improves on his sayings and teasingly criticizes him; and how Boswell s political and religious sympathies with Jacobitism, Scotland and Catholicism coloured the way in which he understood his own, and his country s, uncertain place in the new world of British imperial opportunity.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Very Good. The last genuine rebellion on British soil, the Jacobite rising of 1745 forms one of the greatest 'what ifs' of British history. If Bonnie Prince Charlie's troops had defeated the forces of George II, it is fair to say that the entire subsequent course of the country's history would have been dizzyingly changed. Jacobitism is a comprehensive study of the Stuart dynasty's attempts to regain the thrones of England, Scotland and Ireland in the eighteenth century. It provides not only a history of the Jacobite cause and the Risings but also studies of Jacobite culture, the financing of Jacobitism, the Jacobite diaspora and Jacobitism and nationalism, as well as a critical review of the major changes in Jacobite scholarship this century. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) had an immense impact throughout Europe. His historical fiction, which brought the ideas of Enlightenment to bear on the novel, created for the first time a sense of the past as a place where people thought, felt and dressed differently. His writing influenced Balzac, Dostoevsky, Flaubert, Tolstoy, Dumas, Pushkin and many others; and Scott's interpretation of history was seized on by Romantic nationalists, particularly in Eastern Europe. This book gives for the first time a comprehensive account of the impact of Scott in Europe, from the early and highly influential translations of Defauconpret in France to the continued politicization and censorship of the novels in modern East Germany and Franco's Spain. Generic chapters examine Scott's presence in art and opera, two cultural forms which were deeply affected by his novels. This exciting collection of essays by an international team of leading scholars demonstrates the depth of Scott's impact on European translation, fiction and culture from 1814 to the present. It will be an indispensable research resource for Romanticists everywhere Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) had an immense impact in Europe, as a poet, ballad collector, and most of all as the first historical novelist, who brought the ideas of Enlightenment to bear on the novel. What seemed a remote and abstract question to many has, in the last few years, struck at the heart of the issue of what Britain is - and it is increasingly clear that things will never be the same again.Scottish Nationality is written with these changes in mind. It is the only book available which both gives an overview of what made Scotland a nation across the whole of its history, while also focusing in closely on the issues of the present day, in particular, Scotland's relationship with Britain. Murray Pittock discusses historic Scottish nationality, modern nationalism and patriotism within the Union. What is a nation? How has Scotland developed within Britain? Where does it stand now? And what does the future hold? These questions are all addressed, and Pittock also deals in detail with the essential facts of Scotland's story - not a story which can be understood in isolation. Scottish Nationality examines Scotland's relationship with both England and the wider world in order to put Scotland in context within the new British history and the new Britain itself. As for the future, the book avoids unverifiable predictions, instead showing evidence of various trends, and suggesting the importance of arguments for mutual understanding of Scotland's and England's national traditions. Scottish Nationality offers a full survey of the events and issues in the formation of Scottish identity from the earliest times. The book examines Scotland's relationship with England and the wider world in order to put Scotland in context within the new British history and the new Britain itself.
