Jh. erwähnt, im 14.…Jh. bezogen die Herren von Rietberg den Zehnten. Auskauf der Herrschaftsrechte 1527. Den rätorom. Ortsnamen Veulden leitet Robert von Planta vom Kirchenpatron Hippolytus (Kirche um 1400 erw.) ab. Übertritt zur Reformation 1583. 1596 nahmen die Ausserdomleschger Dörfer die Ausscheidung ihrer Gemeindebänne vor. Der Brand von 1774 zerstörte F. fast völlig. Bis 1851 war F. Nachbarschaft der Gerichtsgem. Ortenstein, seit 1788 mit Trans und Scheid im eigenen Halbgericht "im Berg" vereint. Bis ins 19. Jh. orientierte sich das Dorf Richtung Churer Rheintal (Domat/Ems). Viehwirtschaft und ergänzender Ackerbau waren bis ins 20. Jh. die wichtigsten Wirtschaftszweige. Die Fahrstrasse aus dem Domleschg (Bau 1901-04) ermöglichte einen bescheidenen Sommertourismus. Die Luftseilbahn Rhäzüns-F. wurde 1958 eröffnet. Von 475 Fremdenbetten sind 69% in Zweitwohnungen (1986). 2000 waren gut die Hälfte der Erwerbstätigen im 3. Sektor beschäftigt. Der rätorom.
