This volume has devoted to the study of the elaterids belonging to the genus Melanotus Eschscholtz, subdivided into the two genera Melanotus s.str. and Spheniscomus Schwarz, coming from the Oriental Region (from Pakistan to the Solomon Islands excluding Japan and Taiwan). This treatise comprises a general pare and a systematic one. In the first part the adult and larval features have been pointed out, together with their biology, ecology and geographicl distribution. In the second part a total of 410 species have been examined and described, 296 of which are new and a great number of synonymies and new systematic combinations have been proposed. The species have been divided into the four groupson the grounds of the male genitalia. Besides comprising the original drawings of the male genitalia of almost all species, this volume includes also some determination keys of these species according to their geographical distribution.
