Aggiungi al carrelloHardback. Veronique Plesch, University of Notre Dame Press. Giovanni Canavesio, a Piedmontese artist-priest active in the last decades of the fifteenth century in the southern Alps, left behind a significant body of work, including pictorial cycles and altarpieces. This book is an in-depth analysis of his most ambitious cycle on the Passion of Christ, completed in 1492, on the walls of the pilgrimage sanctuary of Notre-Dame des Fontaines outside the French town of La Brigue. Plesch's primary aim is to understand the cycle's complex and multi-layered meaning. She analyzes the subject matter of the scenes, the significance of their order, how the pictorial and graphic sources were adapted, and the range of formal and visual means used to convey content. Plesch also places Canavesio and his pictorial cycle within wider contexts of the production and consumption of religious art and the nature of devotion in an early modern rural Alpine community. The two facets of Canavesio's life and work-that of artist and that of priest-are also discussed. Plesch argues that the religious messages conveyed by the cycle scenes, as well as the strategies used by the artist to convey meaning and to structure the viewer's experience, were indeed informed by his training as a priest. Canavesio's approach to the definition of meaning, as well as his pictorial strategies, are considered in the context of the medieval art of preaching, an art whose rules derived from those of rhetoric. By also placing the cycle within the larger universe of late medieval religious devotion, Plesch connects Canavesio's work not only with preaching but with devotional meditation and religious theater as well. Aggiungi al carrelloBuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - To what extent does water constitute an archetypal element, producing moral values and prone to ambivalence Myths abound with magical fountains, fertile rivers or deadly abysses. Water lends itself to rites of lustration or regenerative baptismal immersion. Circumnavigation has given rise to epic tales of conquest or exploration, populated by monsters and delights. The specificity of this volume is the knotting together of the iconic and the verbal, by renewing our trust in the exemplary regime of art, most capable of apprehending the unpredictable, the ephemeral, and the continuous. Against the backdrop of existential shipwrecks, water wars, the proliferation of microplastics, the scoriae of an unbridled productivity, a work like this one can raise awareness about the right to water, its beneficial virtues, and its inexhaustible imaginary.

Neuware - This book aims at offering a broad survey of the encounter between word and image studies and anthropology and to demonstrate the mutual benefits of this dialogue for both disciplines in the three fields of the image (Marin), the social history of writing (Petrucci), and memory (Yates). The themes discussed by the contributors to this volume, all specialists in their field, highlight each in their specific field one or more aspects of the agency of both text and image. Bridging the gap between the Anglo-Saxon and the Latin research traditions, this bilingual volume focuses on three major questions: What do we do with texts and images How do texts and images become active cultural agents And what do texts and images help us do Contributions cover a wide range of topics and disciplines (from visual poetry to garden theory and from ekphrasis to new media art), and represent therefore the best possible overview of what cutting-edge analysis in word and image studies stands for today.
