Aggiungi al carrello1686, 3rd edition. (hardcover) Good. [title leaf], [10], 473pp. 32mo. Diminutive volume, measuring 2.5" wide x 4.5" tall x 1.25" thick. Bound in full vellum; title compartments in leather to spine, lettered in gilt. Entire spine with diamond-ruled decorative pattern in gilt; gold much rubbed and faded. The binding was presumably done or, at the very least, extensively repaired in the mid-19th century given the fact that there is a bookplate on the front-pastedown dated 1867 with portions of what appears to be an original leather spine laid beneath. Vellum dust-dirtied; rubbed; circular dirtied spot at head of top cover, presumably from a long-since removed sticker. Covers stiff, somewhat splayed. All edges of textblock done in blue marbling; top edge notably dust-darkened. Marbled eps. Armorial bookplate to front-pastedown that reads "Esperance En Dieu / 1867"; common enough in antiquarian collections. Textblock surprisingly clean through; some dirtying and toning to the prelims; some dampstaining at the foot of the textblock early. Else internally clean. Text in the original Latin on the left within black-border textbox; vulgar Italian translation on the right. Title page device of a wood-cut vignette of a ship. Overall, an attractive, uncommon antiquarian copy of this text. This issue being the 3rd Edition of this work. First published in 1657 in Valenza. Second issue in 1670 in Venice.

Full leather. First Elzevir edition. This diminutive volume is noteworthy for condition, binding, publication, and provenance. This is the 1640 first Elzevir edition of Pliny with noteworthy 17th century provenance, owned by Gilbert Burnet, Bishop of Salisbury and historian, and featuring notably clean contents in a lovely, venerable binding. The duodecimo volume measures 5.25 x 3 inches, bound in attractive late 17th or early 18th century maroon Morocco, covers paneled in gilt with French fillets forming an outer border and an inner frame, the latter with floral vase cornerpieces, raised bands, spine once elaborately gilt in compartments featuring scrolling cornerpieces and lozenge centerpiece (most of the gilt now eroded), all edges gilt. Woodcut printer's device on the title page, woodcut headpieces, initials, and tailpiece. The verso of title page features the armorial bookplate of Gilbert Burnet, "Lord Bishop of Salisbury, Chancellor of the most Noble Order of the Garter." First blank with the ink monogram of Edwin Wolf II (1911-1991), a librarian, bibliophile, author, historian, Franklin scholar, and a civic leader in Philadelphia. Several leaves at rear with older ink marks in margins. Condition approaches very good, the joints a bit flaked with small cracks beginning at top and bottom, spine evenly darkened, fore margin of a few gatherings with faint browning, other minor defects, but nonetheless a sound and attractive copy, the text notably bright and clean. The publisher, Elzevir, was the name of a family of Dutch booksellers, printers, and publishers, 15 members of which were in business between 1587 and 1681.Their duodecimo series of "Elzevirs" of which this is a lovely example became famous and desirable. "After having enjoyed an almost legendary reputation among bibliophiles for excellence of typography and design, the Elzevirs' work is now regarded only as typical of the high quality that prevailed in their day in Holland. Among their four chief typographical devices, the "solitary," consisting of an elm tree, a fruitful vine, and a man alone, with a mottoNon solus("Not alone"), is perhaps the best known." This is the device that adorns the title page of this volume.Offered four bishoprics while still in his twenties, Gilbert Burnet (1643-1715), was not only the most celebrated clergyman of his time, but also a person intimately involved with prominent figures during one of the most intriguing periods of British politics. Burnet is perhaps best known as a historian because of two remarkably popular and influential works - his account of the Reformation in England and his famous 'History of His Own Time,' both of which are still consulted. Born in Scotland, where he held his first appointment as a minister of the Anglican church, Burnet offended Charles II by his desire for greater tolerance of the Scotch Presbyterians, and his opposition to Catholicism later proved so offensive to James II that Burnet retreated to Holland (where this volume was published). There Burnet established warm relations with Princess Mary, James's daughter, who was eventually established on the throne of England with her husband William by the Glorious Revolution, for which Burnet wrote a defense. In 1689, through Mary's patronage, he became bishop of Salisbury. Books from Burnet's library are rarely on offer.References: ODNB; LOC; The Library Company of Philadelphia; Brittanica.

Second Aldine Edition. The letters of the consul and Governor of Biyhinia, friend of Tacitus and Suetonius, provide an interesting view of the varied interests of a cultivated Roman gentleman. "The etiquette of the imperial circle, scenes from the law-courts and the recitation-room, the reunions of dilettanti and philosophers, the busy life of the capital or of the municipal town, the recreations of the seaside and of the country all these he brings vividly before our eyes". (Encyc. Britan., 11th Edn.) Printer's mark at end of book IX, and at end. 18th century vellum; rebacked. A distinguished redaction of the celebrated letters of Pliny the Younger (c.6I-c.112 AD) by the noted Renaissance scholar Filippo Beroaldo (1453-1505). The nine books of letters on a variety of subjects composed in the style of short essays, are a major source for our knowledge of the times. The famous letter 16 (book 6), addressed to his friend Tacitus, describes the eruption of Vesuvius on 24 August AD 79 during which the author's uncle, Pliny the Elder, died. Letter 59 (book 10) to the Emperor Trajan on the treatment of the Christians, is considered the earliest external account of Christian worship, and the fullest statement of the reasons for the execution of Christians; Trajan expresses his approval in his reply in the following letter (60). The volume concludes with the panegyric to Trajan, delivered when Pliny took office as consul for the year 100, in which the emperor is favourably compared to the tyrannical Domitian who preceded him. Traces of marginal waterstaining throughout, title margin neatly repaired without loss, otherwise a clean copy with occasional manuscript notes in Latin penned into blank margins in several neat humanist hands.
