Aggiungi al carrelloTwo volumes, complete. Quarto. pp [56], 704, 703-778, 801-808, 807-846, [120]; extra engraved titlepage depicting a pensive scholar working at his desk intended to represent Pliny or a classical author. Primary titlepage printed slightly tanned, in red and black with engraved printer's vignette. Several woodcut ornaments and illuminated initial capitals in the text, which is in Latin. The final 120-page section is an index. Bound in contemporary full calf with five raised bands to the spine dividing it into six compartments each with heavily gilt ornaments; red morocco title label laid down in second section from top with gilt title lettering. Edges of boards and corners rubbed and some surface scouring to sides. Various notations to the prelim pages tell us the book once belonged to one Mary Cholmondely with the date of 1835 written beneath her pencilled hand. Another manuscript note, this time in pen, claims "this volume was bought from Neumayer in Charing Cross Rd, London, on the 6th January, 1933, by Charles J.E. Grundy - Westminster 9/1/33". In yet another hand we have the ownership signature of one Ricardi Heber, with the date 1791, inscribed in faded ink to the flyleaf. According to Wikipedia, a Richard Heber (1773-1833), descibed as an 'English book collector' born in Westminster, edited the works of Silius Italicus, before developing a taste for collecting classical works of literature. 'His taste broadening, he became interested in early English drama and literature, and began his collection of rare books in these departments. Succeeding on the death of his father in 1804 to large estates in Yorkshire and Shropshire, which he considerably augmented, he forthwith devoted himself to the purchase of rare books'. Heber is perhaps the most famous and oft-cited exemplar of early nineteenth-century bibliomania, and of book collecting on an epic scale. Book. …

Aggiungi al carrello'Over and over again it will be found that the source of some ancient piece of wisdom is Pliny.' (PMM 5) A handsome first edition, first issue of Philemon Holland's renowned English translation of Pliny's Natural History. The most popular of Holland's translations, it had never before been printed in English, and would not be attempted again for another 250 years. One of the greatest translators of the Elizabethan age, Holland's Pliny was an important source for Shakespeare. 'In Othello's allusion to the Pontic Sea, Shakespeare was clearly drawing upon Pliny's Historie as translated by Holland⦠Similarly Pliny has also been cited as a source for Othello's reference to the "medicinal gum" of "the Arabian trees"' (Payne, Search for Meaning, 63), and many trace Caliban in The Tempest to Holland's Pliny. 'The importance of Pliny lay not so much that he was an inexhaustible source for monsters, eclipses, and the stranger habits of all created things, but that in the pages of Philemon Holland's translation Shakespeare found that emphasis on Nature which he employed and re-interpreted in the tragedy' (Evans, The Language of Shakespeare's Plays). First edition in English, first issue (with the Islip imprint); 2 vols, folio (30.5 x 20.7 cm); 2 title pages each with woodcut allegorical device, woodcut head- and tailpieces, decorative initials, last leaf with errata on recto and colophon on verso, one or two instances of early marginalia; lacking first blank leaf in each volume, scattered light foxing and staining, a few marginal open and closed tears, scattered small rust holes costing a few letters, faint dampstaining to a few gatherings; late 18th-century half calf over marbled paper-covered boards, edges speckled red, sometime rebacked with original spines laid down, gilt tooling to spines, red morocco title labels to spines lettered in gilt; a handsome copy. Provenance: H. Holloway (early ownership signature to each title); William Baker (19th century ownership inscription, dated 1820, to each title); Dr. D. Ritchie (acquisition note to front free endpaper of each volume); Sterling l. Spicer (ownership inscription, dated 1925, to front free endpaper of each volume). Aggiungi al carrelloFull leather. First Elzevir edition. This diminutive volume is noteworthy for condition, binding, publication, and provenance. This is the 1640 first Elzevir edition of Pliny with noteworthy 17th century provenance, owned by Gilbert Burnet, Bishop of Salisbury and historian, and featuring notably clean contents in a lovely, venerable binding. The duodecimo volume measures 5.25 x 3 inches, bound in attractive late 17th or early 18th century maroon Morocco, covers paneled in gilt with French fillets forming an outer border and an inner frame, the latter with floral vase cornerpieces, raised bands, spine once elaborately gilt in compartments featuring scrolling cornerpieces and lozenge centerpiece (most of the gilt now eroded), all edges gilt. Woodcut printer's device on the title page, woodcut headpieces, initials, and tailpiece. The verso of title page features the armorial bookplate of Gilbert Burnet, "Lord Bishop of Salisbury, Chancellor of the most Noble Order of the Garter." First blank with the ink monogram of Edwin Wolf II (1911-1991), a librarian, bibliophile, author, historian, Franklin scholar, and a civic leader in Philadelphia. Several leaves at rear with older ink marks in margins. Condition approaches very good, the joints a bit flaked with small cracks beginning at top and bottom, spine evenly darkened, fore margin of a few gatherings with faint browning, other minor defects, but nonetheless a sound and attractive copy, the text notably bright and clean. The publisher, Elzevir, was the name of a family of Dutch booksellers, printers, and publishers, 15 members of which were in business between 1587 and 1681.Their duodecimo series of "Elzevirs" of which this is a lovely example became famous and desirable. "After having enjoyed an almost legendary reputation among bibliophiles for excellence of typography and design, the Elzevirs' work is now regarded only as typical of the high quality that prevailed in their day in Holland. Among their four chief typographical devices, the "solitary," consisting of an elm tree, a fruitful vine, and a man alone, with a mottoNon solus("Not alone"), is perhaps the best known." This is the device that adorns the title page of this volume.Offered four bishoprics while still in his twenties, Gilbert Burnet (1643-1715), was not only the most celebrated clergyman of his time, but also a person intimately involved with prominent figures during one of the most intriguing periods of British politics. Burnet is perhaps best known as a historian because of two remarkably popular and influential works - his account of the Reformation in England and his famous 'History of His Own Time,' both of which are still consulted. Born in Scotland, where he held his first appointment as a minister of the Anglican church, Burnet offended Charles II by his desire for greater tolerance of the Scotch Presbyterians, and his opposition to Catholicism later proved so offensive to James II that Burnet retreated to Holland (where this volume was published). There Burnet established warm relations with Princess Mary, James's daughter, who was eventually established on the throne of England with her husband William by the Glorious Revolution, for which Burnet wrote a defense. In 1689, through Mary's patronage, he became bishop of Salisbury. Books from Burnet's library are rarely on offer.References: ODNB; LOC; The Library Company of Philadelphia; Brittanica.…
