It reveals how, during World War II, Australia covertly imported 1,000,000 chemical weapons, including 16 types of mustard gas, to counter the potential threat posed by Japan. The book explores the storage, handling, and disposal of these weapons, as well as the live trials conducted to test their effectiveness. Plunkett also highlights the Chemical Warfare Armourers, the personnel responsible for managing these dangerous weapons, many of whom suffered physical and mental consequences due to their exposure. The book contains over 300 photographs, offering a rare visual history of this secretive chapter in Australia's military past. After twenty-two men had successfully defended the Dili airfield - holding up the Japanese invasion forced for six valuable hours - the unit regrouped in the mountainous interior from where it launched an extraordinary guerrilla campaign.
