Hardcover. Condizione: Very good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very good. viii, [2], 242, [4] pages. Signed by the Author sticker on front of the DJ. Bookplate on fep with "We wrote this book for you!" printed and the tome and signed Mike Birbiglia and Jerry below. Mike Birbiglia is a comedian, storyteller, director, actor and New…York Times bestselling author who has performed in front of audiences worldwide. His shows, My Girlfriend's Boyfriend and Thank God for Jokes, were both filmed for Netflix. His most recent show, The New One, ran for ninety-nine shows at the Cort Theatre on Broadway. In addition to performing live, Mike wrote, directed, and starred in the films Sleepwalk with Me and Don't Think Twice. His first book Sleepwalk with Me and Other Painfully True Stories was a finalist for the Thurber Prize for American Humor. As an actor, Mike has appeared on Inside Amy Schumer, HBO's Girls, and Broad City, as well as in films like Trainwreck, The Fault in Our Stars, and Popstar. He played recurring roles in Orange is the New Black and Billions. He is a frequent contributor to public radio's This American Life and The Moth Radio Hour and was honored in 2017 with the Kurt Vonnegut Award for humor. J. Hope Stein is a poet, and the author of Little Astronaut. Her work has been published in the New York Times, the New Yorker and Poetry International. Derived from a Kirkus review: Self-deprecating reflections on the peaks and valleys of modern fatherhood. Comedian Birbiglia and his wife, Stein, parlay their individual creative talents into a funny and wise memoir on parenting. Fusing good humor and raw honesty with selections from Stein's evocative poetry, Birbiglia narrates his journey into parenting using material previously adapted for the Broadway stage. From the outset, the author admits to having "a low tolerance for children because I've lost a lot of great friends to kids." He was up front about that fact since he and wife Stein got married in 2008, but when she casually mentioned that having children would 'be different' for them, Birbiglia knew he was in store for some major changes. Though he outlines seven reasons for his reluctance about becoming a fatherâ"e.g., overpopulation, cancer history, a lack of great people in the worldâ"Birbiglia eventually warmed to the idea. The couple birthed their daughter, Oona, despite the author's varicocele condition, demanding touring schedules, and Stein's brutally difficult pregnancy. The author ably narrates these hurdles with the serious concern of a devoted husband and the comic timing of a seasoned entertainer. Throughout the book, Stein seamlessly interweaves her artistic verses, tempering all the facetiousness beautifully. Never clinical or overly extreme, Birbiglia's lighthearted, refreshingly droll approach to starting a family will appeal most to readers who can identify with both his reluctance to couple up and his acceptance and embracement of parenting. There are also shared moments of introspection and maturity, not to mention useful wisdom. As Oona moved into toddlerhood, Birbiglia began to accept himself as the "decent dad" he never thought he could become. Hilarious, relatable, cringeworthy, and effortlessly entertaining, particularly for new parents or those in contemplation. First Edition [stated]. Second printing [Stated]. Oona (Author photograph) and Wendy MacNaughton and (illustratore).

First edition hard back binding in publisher's original elaborately gilt decorated cobalt blue cloth covered boards, blocked and lettered gilt back, spine and front, all page edges gilt, bevelled edges. Bound by Bone & Son, 76 Fleet Street, London. Quarto. 10'' x 8¼''. Contains red and black printed title, the text block and poe…ms being printed on thick card stock. With 35 wonderful (the re-published edition with 28 plates) full-page single-sided black and white engravings by Arthur Boyd Houghton, the engraved illustrations from famed Victorian era wood engravers and illustrators George and Edward Dalziel. Like George du Maurier, who was a friend of his, Arthur Boyd Houghton had been afflicted by the loss an eye when he was young. However, he continued to paint as well as illustrate: among his paintings were charming paintings of family life, some jewel-like pictures of children, and some small, slightly disturbing works depicting street scenes (Lambourne 371, 183, 133). Lengthy pencil note to the front paste down 'Xmas 1865 - This year also saw 'Home Thoughts and Home Scenes', a book with 35 drawings of children by A. Boyd Houghton by Routledge, 1865, which was afterwards republished as 'Happy Day Stories'. This book is absolutely essential to any representative collection of the period, but nevertheless its designs can hastily be regarded as among the artists masterly works. Houghton is said to have taken more pains over these drawings than any others. His style in them is as far removed as possible from his later impressions, therefore the book is essential to a collection of his work.' Spine repaired with webbing exposed to the spine edges, plate number 6 with bottom corner missing, 'Age and Youth' poem with tear to the top edge, 'The Sports of Childhood Show the Future Man' poem with repaired tear across the centre of the leaf, heavy foxing to the front and rear end papers and to the margins of the plates and text block. Extremely scarce. Member of the P.B.F.A. ILLUSTRATED (Picture Book).

Clamshell box by David Brock. Condizione: Fine. Like New mostly. First Edition. No. 25 of 90 copies in limitation. Stunning color plates thickly painted to the point that one would perceive the plates as entirely painted, perhaps, and not just richly painted woodcuts. The modernist artwork has elements of Surrealism, abstraction…, deliberately naivete, primitivism, Fauvism, etc. etc. We aren't saying that each illustration has all of these elements fused together, but rather one sees one influence here, another there. Poems are Japanese Tankas by Tamiko Abe, Akitaka Uhimura, Kancko Murayama and Isamu Nagase. The clamshell box is 56 by 19 cm, and 3 cm deep. The leaves within are 54 by 17.5 cm. Unpaginated, 25 leaves, counting artwork. The artwork is accompanied by "tissue guards" which are here of clear mylar, and these we aren't counting in our leaf count. The artist's book was printed on luxurious linen paper, and clearly attention was given to every element of quality. The only issue of the whole package is that the clamshell box has a band of vaguely white discoloration or color loss, perhaps 2 cm wide, on its back, and two shorter bands nearby. These look like simply embedded dust, and they are faint. While we think they should be erasable, we have been unable to. DeLoss McGraw (illustratore).
