Aggiungi al carrello3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In stamped and postmarked envelope, addressed in the same hand to 'J. Y. [sic] Baron Esq. | 48, Griffin Street, | Tritton | Blackburn'. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper, in slightly discoloured envelope. It is not known who acted as Marston's amanuensis after the death of his sister Cicely in 1878:…the present letter is written in a neat and somewhat childish hand. It dates from what had been an extremely trying year for Marston, with Rossetti dying the previous April, and the dying James Thomson being carried from Marston's rooms two months later. Baron was a shameless autograph hunter, and in response to one of his stock requests Marston begins: 'Dear Sir, | I am sorry to have misunderstood your inquiry, as I see I have done. My two books are published by Chatto & Windus of Piccadilly, where I have no doubt they can be procured'. He would be glad to send Baron a photograph, but he has none. 'I was last taken six years ago, & had only a few copies made', an engraving from one of them appearing in 'Harper's Magazine' in May of the same year, in an article entitled 'some London Poets', 'but in case you should come across it I may say that it does not please my friends'. He concludes with thanks for Baron's 'warm wishes'.

Aggiungi al carrelloSee his entry in the Oxford DNB. 1p, 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded twice for postage. Reads: 'Dear Miss Cond, / I have pleasure in sending you my signature. As you will see, it is quite an ordinary one. / Yours very truly / William Plomer'. The signature is in fact rather stylish in an understated way, and the un…derlining has two small curls in it. In ink on otherwise-blank reverse, by someone who misread the signature: 'William Ploms'. See Image.

He begins by informing Baron that four numbers of 'The Lark' have already been published. 'Messrs Hart & Co 22 Paternoster Row are the Lo…ndon Publishers No 5 for December is now at Press with Christmas supplement - 16 pages size of Punch - with eg Poems by Tennyson - Lord Lytton - Sir Theodore Martin - Sir Samuel Ferguson - Austin Dobson - G R Sims - Mrs Craik & other fine living English Poets - such a pennyworth for eminent contributors & quality of Contents as has never been issued before'. He proceeds to list seven individuals, including 'Mr Gladstone', who will contribute to the sixth issue. He continues: 'I defer for the present the consideration of original contributors having had the gems of 60 living poets placed at my disposal - Make it known in Blackburn - & buy a copy at each of the Newsvendors you know If they once get it they will keep it.' He ends by describing the magazine as 'a powerful influence set in action to refine & delight the People'.

He begins by explaining that he has 'had every minute so fully occupied of late', that he has not been able to comply with Baron's request. 'Lady Martin has… done what she is now most reluctant to do - written the name she once bore with a few lines from Cymbeline. I have copied the verse you wish from the little Bon Gaultier Poem'. He explains that this was written 'upon a remark actually made by a young friend of mine when looking over the odds & ends of gifts &c. that had accumulated in his drawers!'.

Il est surtout connu pour avoir exposer à plusieurs reprises au Salon des Humoriste, une manifestation créée en 1907 par Félix Juven, directeur du journal Le Rire. Ce Salon regroupe alors les peintres attachés à la vie montmartroise qui choisissent d'exprimer leur art par l'humour. Forain, Willette, Faivre, Poulbot et bien d'autres y présentent leurs uvres comme Hoyois. Ce Salon s'impose très vite comme l'une des manifestations artistiques les plus suivies de la Belle Époque. Massey begins his letter: 'Dear Sir, | There is nothing of mine on Sale in England except the Tale of Eternity and I am too busy with the real Work of my life to attend to a…nything else.' (According to his entry in the Oxford DNB, Massey's 'faith in spiritualistic phenomena was lasting and monopolized most of his later years'.) He is sending Bacon 'a Pamphlet relating to the first two Vols which can be had of the Publishers (for the present) price 20/-. They would probably fetch twice the price in the Second-hand lists.' He concludes by stating that a copy of his 'Shakespeare (2nd. Ed. with Supplement) however, can be had privately, price one Guinea'.
