Volume two dustjacket damaged at center of front cover. First American edition. Marxist Library XXVII and XXVIII. Major work of the Soviet historian that was originally published in 1920. Opens with congratulations by Lenin and some general historiographical remarks before racing through the broad arc of Russian history, all the way from Slavic settlement through the prelude to the October Revolution. Emphasizes class struggle against Great Man conceptions and Tsarist Russia as a prison-house of nations. Pokrovsky's analysis would posthumously lose official favor in the years following this translation, with accusations of anti-patriotism accelerating after the outbreak of WWII. Scarce in the trade.…
