Selbstverständlich kommen dabei jene Probleme zur Sprache, die unter den Schlagworten "Saurer Regen", "Ozonsmog", "Waldsterben oder Neuartige Waldschäden" bekannt sind. Das Werk beschäftigt sich mit den komplexen Ursachen für die Schädigung von mitteleuropäischen Waldökosystemen. Wie notwendig es ist zu differenzieren, zeigen die Darstellungen zu einzelnen Baumarten, bei denen die Schädigung oft ganz verschiedene Wege geht (Tanne, Fichte, Buche, Stiel- und Traubeneiche). Umweltveränderungen, die der Mensch vor längerer Zeit verursacht hat (Waldweide, Baumartenwahl, Kahlschläge, hohe Wildstände) wirken sich noch heute auf den Zustand von Wäldern aus. Hilfsmaßnahmen, die sich aus der Analyse der Schädigungsursachen ergeben, werden am Schluss behandelt.
