Aggiungi al carrelloOriginal Wraps. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: No Jacket, as Issued. First UK Edition. A first printing of the true first UK edition, published as a paperback original in 1971. The book was originally published in the USA in hardcover by the Aldine Publishing Company in 1969. Ranging from pool hustling to pornography, this book analyzes deviant branches of American life. Ned Polsky (1928-2000) was an American author and sociologist best known for this celebrated book on American counterculture. ***Very good in the trademark Pelican Books colours - black printed turquoise-blue and white covers. The covers have some marks and creasing commensurate with age and handling, but are actually remarkably clean. There is some light rubbing to the edges, but no serious creases or tears. The spine has very light reading creases and is slightly curved from reading (please see scans). Internally also very good with no previous ownership inscriptions or annotations - just the shadow from a label on the first printed page which has offset to the inside front cover (please see scans). No creases or tears. The pages are clean, although the paper has tanned over the decades. ***217 pages plus four pages of other titles at the back of the book. 182mm x 110mm. ***Contents: Preface, Of Pool Playing and Poolrooms, The Hustler, Research Method, Morality and Criminology, The Village Beat Scene: Summer 1960, On the sociology of Pornography, Name Index, Subject Index. ***'Ned Polsky (Oct 20, 1928 - Jun 13, 2000) was an American author and sociologist who wrote the 1969 book "Hustlers, Beats, and Others," about political culture, criminology and pool hustlers. He was also known for his criticism of Norman Mailer's essay "The White Negro," included with the essay in later collections of Mailer's work, and as an "insane Joyce fanatic" who memorized long passages from Finnegans Wake. Polsky studied linguistics and literature at the University of Wisconsin, and pursued graduate studies in sociology at the University of Chicago, although he did not complete his degree. He was for many years a professor of sociology at Stony Brook University, and served as vice president of the Society for the Study of Social Problems in 1971-1972. He was also a skilled pool player, and in his retirement became an antiquarian bookseller. In 1968, he signed the "Writers and Editors War Tax Protest" pledge, vowing to refuse tax payments in protest against the Vietnam War.' (Wiki) ***'Ned Polsky is an American sociologist who discusses in this Pelican several types of deviance which are today spreading from the United States to this country. He interviews the "hustler" and the unconvicted felon, examining their lives and occupations from recruitment to retirement. By this means he corrects those criminologists who only view the criminal when behind bars.' (Quote taken from the back cover) ***A first printing of the true first UK edition, published as a paperback original in 1971. One of the less common Pelican editions in nice collectable condition. A useful book for those interested in hustlers, The Beats, criminology and Pool! ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
