Le mot kolkhoze est une contraction de ???????????? ????????? (kollektivnoïé khoziaïstvo), « ferme collective », alors que sovkhoze est une contraction de ????????? ????????? (littéralement « ferme soviétique »). Les kolkhozes et sovkhozes étaient deux composantes du système agricole, dont l'idée a émergé après la révolution d'Octobre 1917 et qui fut officiellement lancé en 1928-1929 sous Staline.
