This 1912 Poole Brothers railroad map of the United States and Canada details the Canadian Pacific Railway and its many connections. Created with both vacationers and business travelers in mind, bright red lines highlight the Canadian Pacific Railway's network throughout southern Canada and the northern United States. These lines connect Boston, Ottawa, Montreal, Detroit, Minneapolis, Chicago, Winnipeg, and Vancouver. Canadian national parks, such as Banff, are labeled in bold. Thinner but bold black lines promote lines connecting cities further afield throughout the United States, underscoring the railroad's continental reach. Additionally, dashed lines trace steamship routes, including one between Vancouver, Victoria, and Seattle. Information concerning ticketing routes and optional routes appears in the lower right. This is an 1898 Poole Brothers map of Washington and Oregon issued to promote Oregon emigration, land sales, and railroad travel. The map was published on behalf of the Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company and the Southern Pacific Railroad. Encouraging Emigration Black lines trace the rail networks with white dots marking stops. Thinner lines illustrate the routes of the Great Northern Railway and the Northern Pacific Railroad in Washington. Perhaps to entice visitors (and more likely hopeful settlers) from San Francisco, a thick dashed line highlights the Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company's steamship route from Portland to San Francisco. The Portland and Asiatic Steamship Company's route to China and Japan is noted as well, underscoring Portland as a city with connections, another attractive point for possible newcomers. Slogans along the top and bottom promote the region's natural wealth and the opportunities it presents. The Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company The Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company operated from 1896 until 1910, when control was fully transferred to Union Pacific. The Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company's direct predecessor, the Oregon Railway and Navigation Company (ORN) was incorporated on June 13, 1879, by Henry Villard and could trace its lineage to 1860. It operated steamboats on the Columbia, Willamette, and Snake Rivers as well. Villard, who also owned the Oregon and California Railroad, jealously guarded the ORN's operating monopoly in Oregon and worked hard to keep both the Northern Pacific and Union Pacific out of Oregon. He even managed to gain a controlling stake in Northern Pacific in 1881. The ORN operated the only transcontinental route to Portland and concluded a deal with Union Pacific to operate as their connection in Oregon in 1884. Villard was ousted as president of the ORN in late 1883, which soon led to Northern Pacific and Union Pacific 'encroaching' on the ORN's territory in Oregon. This led to ORN leasing its operation to Union Pacific in 1887. Union Pacific went bankrupt in 1893, as did the ORN and Union Pacific's subsidiary in Oregon the Oregon Short Line. This ended Union Pacific's lease of the ORN and also forced the ORN to reorganize as the Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company in 1896. Publication History and Census This map was created by the Poole Brothers and issued by the passenger departments of the Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company and the Southern Pacific Company in 1898. We note two cataloged examples of the 1898 edition, one at the New York Public Library and another with Washington State University. It is scarce on the private market. This is a 1907 Poole Brothers map of the Pacific Coast of British Columbia and environs, produced for the Canadian Pacific Railway. Though highlighting multiple steamship routes in the region, it was produced in the wake of the Yukon Gold Rush, the impetus for establishing most of these services. A Closer Look Coverage extends from Dawson (City) in the north to Portland, Oregon, in the south, with the main focus being British Columbia, the Yukon Territory, and the southernmost portion of Alaska. Waterways, settlements, mountains (some with elevations), glaciers, rail lines (Canadian Pacific in thick black lines with stations noted, competitors with narrower black lines), and steamship routes are marked throughout. Promotional text and images on the verso discuss sights and services (including times, fares, and particular ships) all along the routes seen on the recto. The steamship lines extending beyond the scope of the map to Yokohama and Honolulu stand out prominently towards the bottom. The other lines transited up and down the Pacific Coast, often slicing through narrow straits or channels between large islands and/or the mainland. By the time of this map's production, a railway linked the steamer passengers disembarking at Skagway and Dyea to the mining towns further north; this was the White Pass and Yukon Route, curiously marked here as 'Pac. and Arc.' Ironically, by the time the railway was completed in 1900, the gold rush had largely ended, but it found another use as a freight railway. br The 'Provisional International Boundary' east of Juneau was a virtual non-issue until the Yukon Gold Rush and then became a major bone of contention between the United States and Canada, only resolved by an international tribunal in the years immediately preceding this map's production (much to the annoyance of the Canadians, who were denied access to the Pacific near the gold diggings). Manuscript Notes Certainly, one of the more interesting features of this example is the handwriting and illustrations at left, describing the beautiful view, complete with a rainbow, spotted between the mountains and a glacier during the owner's 1909 voyage. The purpose of the owner's trip is unclear, but by this time, the voyage was more likely to be sightseeing or visiting relatives than gold mining. The Yukon or Klondike Gold Rush The Yukon or Klondike Gold Rush is a watershed event in the modern history of Alaska and western Canada, transforming the region and setting the course of its economic and environmental history for decades afterward. The original Yukon gold discovery was made in 1896 in the Bonanza (Rabbit) Creek area, but it quickly became apparent that the gold regions were far vaster. Word traveled quickly, and by July 1897, a stampede of prospectors from throughout the United States and Canada were headed to the Klondike. This was compounded by the fact that a series of bank failures in 1897 left the American economy in disarray and many out of work. Over 40,000 prospectors and their families moved to Alaska, generally by way of Seattle or perhaps San Francisco. The Klondike Gold Rush drew such notables as future U.S. President William H. Taft, adventurer Frederick Russell Burnham, and author W. W. White. The near-endless demand for transporting people and goods to the Yukon prompted the creation of several steamship companies. The Canadian Pacific Railway, which had experience operating long-distance steamships in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, cleverly capitalized on this demand by setting up a steamer service that linked to its transcontinental railway routes terminating at Vancouver. This is a 1929 Poole Brothers map of Alaska promoting the Alaska Steamship Company and their routes from the northernmost Alaska to Seattle, Washington. The map highlights American enthusiasm over the mineral wealth and natural resources of Alaska and the Yukon. Go to Alaska and Make a Fortune The Klondike, Fairbanks, and Nome gold placers are highlighted, as well as the Nenana, Matanuska, and Bering River coal fields. Other highlighted resources include the Point Barrow Oil Field, along with a handful of other oil fields, and the Kennecott copper mines. Mt. McKinley National Park and the U.S. Seal Preserve around the Pribilof Islands are identified using the same symbol, allowing for no distinction in importance between preservation of natural landscapes and the exploitation of natural resources. How to Get There The two major routes of the Alaska Steamship Company are illustrated in red, the Inside Route (which ventured up the Pacific coast to Skagway, Valdez, and Seward) and the Nome and St. Michael route. The Copper River and Northwestern Railroad and the Alaska Railroad are depicted both on the central map and via an inset. The inset map details the route of the Copper River and Northwestern from Seward to Fairbanks and the Alaska from Cordova to Kennecott. The inset map also notes the military telegraph lines, stage routes, and wireless stations. A table of distances from Seattle to thirteen locations in Alaska is included along the bottom border. This impressive, early promotional chromolithographic map of Yellowstone National Park was prepared by Carl J. Hals and Arvid Rydstrom in 1882 and was printed by Poole Brothers for the Northern Pacific Railroad. It coincided with the Northern Pacific's opening of a rail link to the park, the first easy means for the masses to access it, which helped boost the park's image in the popular imagination and spur Western American nature tourism. A Closer Look Coverage includes the entirety of Yellowstone National Park. Color contrast is used to represent changes in elevation, with mountain peaks labeled and their elevations noted. The Yellowstone River, Yellowstone Lake, Shoshone Lake, and other waterways are traced, as are the handful of wagon roads and trails running through the park and from it to the rail station at Cinnabar. Geysers, hot springs, and the small number of existing accommodations are also indicated. An inset map at the bottom-left displays the wider region, highlighting the connection of the Yellowstone branch line to the mainline of the Northern Pacific at Livingston, Montana. The verso contains a fascinating reimagining of Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland , in which an adult Alice writes a letter to 'Edith,' probably a reference to the youngest child of Carroll's friend Henry Liddell, whose middle child Alice provided the name for the novel's protagonist. In the letter, Alice tells her 'cousin' about the wonders of Yellowstone, 'every bit as strange and bewildering' as her dream described in Carroll's book. This imagined letter was a clever and creative way for the Northern Pacific to promote the park and the railway simultaneously. Interspersed are illustrations of Alice enjoying the park, natural scenes, and other images evoking adventure and excitement. A final panel lays out a series of tour options, originating in St. Paul and offering various itineraries of the park's main attractions.
