Dustwrapper and book have identical design, grid of 6 squares, illustrated with images representing the poems with red over gold, or gold over red, figures; Title lettering in white superimposed upon a 5/8" band of dark green across upper middle front cover. Dustwrapper price-clipped with micro chip to surface red at lower right front cover corner; small 1/8" open tear at gutter lower left corner front cover and micro ruffling across spine end; 5/8 x 1/16" missing bit at rear cover lower left corner and on lower edge; micro tear at top right front cover corner: describes worse than it is, but there you have it: essentially Fine with cosmetic flaws and NO fading to spine or covers, like book itself, appearing fresh and newish. Only peccadillo with book itself is tiny chips at lower spine corners, revealing gray beneath missing white bits of surface at those corners: still nugatory. Strong sewn binding; corners sharp (NO bumps or curls); virtually no rubbing wear (dustwrapper did its job); NO previous owner names. Clean text. Arguably, in Gift-Giving Condition. Such was the popularity of Warner's portrayal of George Dixon, that the Queen told him it had become part of 'the British way of life', and he was carried to his grave by six real officers from Paddington Green Police Station. LETTER: 1p, 4to. Folded twice. In good…condition, lightly aged. Signature 'Jack.' and salutation to 'My dear Popie' in Warner's hand; the rest typed. Letterhead with his name. He is sending 'the long promised photos', delayed because he 'had to get some new prints of the "pipe" one. It is the character I play in the film, "Carve her name with Pride", with Virginia McKenna and Paul Schofield. / I look a bit scruffy but I think people get a bit fed up with "tidy" pictures, and anyway it is the character, and after all that is what matters.' He 'just got through the show' on the previous Saturday, before going 'home to bed with "flu". It was a very near thing and I have never felt more like chucking my hand in, but only because I could hardly think or see anybody. What we do for ART, eh? I'd like to meet this fellow Art one of these days.' In a postscript he states that his 'Indian doctor performed a miracle'. PHOTOGRAPH: 16 x 20.5 cm black and white print, with unobtrusive vertical crease. Inscribed 'To / A lifelong "FAN."' and 'With best wishes / Sincerely / Jack Warner / Sergt Dixon'. Princess Elizabeth has graciously consented to attend the Concert to be held by the National Federation of Jazz Organizations, of which I am President, at the Royal Festival Hall, South Bank, on Saturday evening, July 14th. / This Concert would have been in any case a great landmark in British Jazz because it is no small honour to this type of Folk Music to be granted the use of the Royal Festival Hall. But it becomes historical due to Her Royal Highness's intended presence - it is in fact to the best of my knowledge the first time that Royalty has publicly recognised this musical idiom.' He offers boxes to the event 'On behalf of my Kent Army Cadet Force Welfare' (on the letterhead Donegall is listed as one of four members of the 'Welfare Committee'). He concludes: 'Such has been the nation-wide interest in the revival of genuine Jazz Music that I am sure you will not want to miss this unique and royally honoured presentation of the best that Britain has to contribute in this branch of Music.'.

ONE: 30 December 1947. 4pp, 4to. 'This letter will be quite a "rat-tat from the past" (as Geo. Graves used to say), & its many a long year since I last saw you - & much has happened since "those were the days" & carriages were at 11. I have been thinking a lot lately of those days (& evenings) when I used to see you entering my tube train at Finsbury Park, both bound for Theatreland & our work therein - which we both loved.' He praises MP's 'recent writing on my favourite topic & my one & only period - the theatre in my time, say from 1890 onwards!' He is fulsome in praise of MP's work, adding 'My friend Wyatt shares these joys with me, & he tells me visited you recently? [.] Strange isnt it that Wyatt is the nephew of my old dresser Bartlett. Who was with me for years until he died?' He discusses his past ill health, adding 'I'm really in pretty good form, considering I'm 77 - in fact only 3 months short of 78.'' After the death of his beloved wife he has been fortunate enough to marry 'an old friend of ours of over 40 years & has lived here for the past 10 years [.] My wife passed away last January, & my dear & I were married at Canterbury on July 17'. He is sorry that he has not been 'up to' responding to MP's two recent letters, and now thanks him 'for the Copy of that nice little mag "The Playgoer," which was, naturally, made more interesting by our article on "Gaiety Gals" - including pictures of Sylvia Storey & Jean Alwyn both in "Havana"! Also my old publicity "guvoner" [sic] H. C. G (Inky) Stevens has an article on "Show folk" which I enjoyed - as you may imagine. Of course I could not refrain from a little longing when I thought of Gaiety, "Havana" & "Show folk"! Ah me.' He has sent him a photograph of the Lowther Arcade, as he 'thought the sight of the dear old place might have revived a few delightful memories'. 'I was much amused about your story of Alphours & Tauber, & I hope that when you refer to my book for anything you want, you won't miss my anecdotes about (1) Geo Edwardes & Willie Ward at a "Cuts" rehearsal ("I must save time") & (2) Geo Edwardes greeting Alfred Lester who had called to protest about me having all the numbers to sing in "Havana"'. In a postscript he writes: 'I, like you, am so fond of, & wrapped up in the Theatre that I love to write about it - if I write any-thing, & I thought I'd struck a good idea (& a good title) when I wrote a book recently: - / "The Private life of a Theatre" / The first chapter was an account of a visit to a typical musical comedy with everything that happens from the entry of the orchestra to the final curtain, & then I say: - "now those few hours are all the general public know of the life of a theatre: but what about all those other 20 hours? Does nothing happen" etc etc / But Hutchinson's didn't like it, so its put away in Lavender with other mementos.'.
