Aggiungi al carrelloASSOCIATION COPY INSCRIBED, SIGNED, AND DATED BY THE AUTHOR AND ADDITIONALLY SIGNED BY THE ILLUSTRATOR AND HIS WIFE WITH ALS FROM LATTER LAID-IN. First printing (as stated upon copyright page). [8], 383 pages. Hardcover: H 21.75cm x L 14.75cm. Dust jacket with pictorial illustration on front panel and spine by Arthur Hawkins; ru…bbing and soiling to panels; shallow chipping at spine and flap fold ends; nicks and tears and panel edges; steep clip to front flap's bottom corner but with publisher's printed price still retained at top; dj now presented in a mylar Brodart protector. Blue cloth with silver stamping to spine and front board. Toning to top edge and fore-edge; small light stain near fore-edge heel. Light toning to Alexander Popini-illustrated endpapers; some tearing to surface paper at rear endpaper gutter but hinge remains firm. Half-title page has four-line blue ink inscription "For Queenie Moss McCaskill, with special reference to pages 181-209, | from Vilhjalmur Stefansson | December 6, 1940" followed by four-line black ink "with all my love | Popini | and | Eloise" (first two lines by the artist with his signature written diagonally within his standard logo box and concluding two lines written by his wife who is also the inscribee's daughter). Past owner laid-in small paper slips at Popini illustrations; a few spots of scattered light soiling but interior pages overall remain clean. Binding is firm. A very good+ copy in a very good- dust jacket. Laid-in at front endpapers is two-sided autographed letter signed (ALS, i.e. handwritten letter) dated for September 8, 1940 on Hotel Sherman Square, New York stationery from daughter Eloise McCaskill Popini to her mother Queenie McCaskill, a member of a long-standing Columbus, Mississippi family. Letter details some events regarding the book's publication with the author apparently referenced as "Stef" and her illustrator husband being "Sasha;" letter indicates that Macmillan liked Popini's illustrations to the extant that they wished they could have given him the dust jacket commission too but evidently that assignment had been given to Arthur Hawkins (renowned for his dust jacket and advertising art/design from the 1920s to 1960s) when Stefansson and Macmillan first arranged for the book's publication. Stefansson credits Eloise McCaskill for help with his research and the two apparently collaborated as editors on the 1938 Argonaut Press edition of George Best's THE THREE VOYAGES OF MARTIN FROBISHER for which McCaskill also wrote an introduction. Romanian-born artist Alexander Popini (1878-1962) enjoyed a long career in New York as a sculptor and as a magazine illustrator with occasional book credits including, most prominently, ULTIMA THULE.
