L'édition originale a paru en 1571.« Maurice de La Porte (1530-1571) occupe une place particulièrement en vue dans le mouvement littéraire du XVIe siècle. Il n'a cependant laissé qu'un seul ouvrage : les Epithètes françaises qui lui valut une réputation que certains critiques ont jugée un peu surfaite, mais qui se justifie très bien, du fait que cet ouvrage contribua dans une large mesure à faire cesser l'état de flottement de la langue française dont la formation n'était pas encore achevée. Fruit d'un commerce intime et prolongé avec « les plus fameux poètes français, écrit-il dans sa préface, outre lesquels j'ai lu pareillement en prose, les meilleurs auteurs traduits en notre vulgaire », ce travail exerça une grande et bienfaisante influence pour la fixation de la langue française » (Grente).Provenance : Adrien de Gasparin 1783-1862 (cachet ex-libris sur le titre). Préfet du Rhône (1831-1835), ministre de l'Intérieur (1836), directeur de l'Institut agronomique de Versailles (1851-1852), il fut membre de l'Institut, Académie des sciences, section économie rurale. Nommé Pair de France en 1834, c'est à partir de cette date qu'il se qualifie "comte".
