This monograph is a study of the series of seventeenth century emblem manuscripts with more than two thousand drawings and poems with which the Jesuits used to commend the quality of their education system to the outside world, now owned by the Royal… Library of Belgium. The Brussels collection (some forty volumes) is unique and special. It covers the production of a single college during a long span of time (1630-1685). The high artistic as well as literary quality which the volumes so often achieve lends the collection moreover a rare distinction: wonderful gouaches (by Antoon Sallaert), no less splendid calligraphy (e.g. byG.H. Wilmart) and sophisticated, erudite Latin and Greek verses.

In het literair-historisch onderzoek van vandaag gaat de aandacht vooral naar de maatschappelijke context waarbinnen teksten zijn ontstaan en hebben gefunctioneerd. Deze benadering komt zeer duidelijk tot uiting in de thans zo ingrijpend vernieuwde en krachtig bloeiende studie van de Middel…nederlandse letterkunde. De belangstelling van de literaire medievistiek is verschoven van tekst naar context, naar de rol van de mecenas, naar de wijzen waarop teksten werden verbreid, naar hun geintendeerde en hun feitelijke publiek, naar de rol die zij speelden in de vorming, de handhaving of verandering van opinies en mentaliteiten. Filologen definieren zich meer en meer als literair-historici, waarbij het tweede lid van deze samenstelling het volle gewicht krijgt. De esthetische waardering die in de vroegere geschiedverhalen over onze oude letteren zo vaak het laatste woord kreeg, wordt thans terecht als onwetenschappelijk van de hand gewezen. Maar literair-historici zijn ook literair-historici. Wat zij doen wordt niet alleen gelegitimeerd vanuit de nieuwsgierigheid die aan elke vorm van geschiedbeoefening eigen is.Hun vak bestaat ook bij de bijzondere gratie van een literaire cultuur die ook nog de oude teksten, zij het onder historische controle, literair-esthetisch wenst te ervaren. Zonder zich te willen gedragen als de "Nieuwe Sensibelen" van de literatuurgeschiedenis, hebben de negentien vakspecialisten die in dit boek aan het woord komen, zich in een tegendraadse opwelling, aan zo'n esthetische benadering gewaagd. Zij kozen elk een tekst die zij in literair opzicht boeiend, geslaagd of gewoon aardig vonden en pogen aan te tonen hoe de auteur dit voor elkaar heeft gebracht. Zij doen dat niet vanuit een nauwelijks vol te houden Credo in de eeuwige, boventijdelijke literatuur, maar op grond van de hun toegemeten historische competentie. Op deze wijze hopen zij als literair-historici niet alleen de geschiedenis, maar ook de literatuur een dienst te bewijzen. De bundel behandelt allerlei soorten teksten, hoge mystiek en politieke propaganda, wufte lyriek, maar ook wijze lering, spannende verhaalkunst en nuttige lectuur. Ze zijn alle producten van "knappe" schrijvers waaraan nog veel "tegendraads" genoegen valt te beleven.
