Biography of the celebrated American conservationist, 'open-air' writer, novelist, naturalist and photographer Gene Stratton-Porter, written by her daughter, Jeanette Porter Meehan. Not well known in the UK but famous in the USA, Stratton-Porter is known as 'The Lady of the Limberlost' because of her close association with the Limberlost Swamp in Indiana, most of which was cleared and drained in the early C20 but sections of which are now conserved. Stratton-Porter made 'The Limberlost' the focus of much of her non-fiction and novels. Among her most well known fiction are the two 'romantic nature' novels, 'Freckles' and 'A Girl of the Limberlost'. 369 pages printed on thick cream paper and bound on green boards with gold, gilt lettering to the front cover and spine (gilt lettering is faded on the spine). Pages are rough-cut to the edges. End papers are attractively illustrated with green and purple central floral designs. Judged to be in overall Good+ condition, with aforementioned fading to spine lettering and small rubs & bumps on spine & board edges. Clean, very tidy and tightly bound. A photograph of 'Grace Greenwood' (a favourite doll) is to the frontispiece and 6 other b. & w. photos/illustrations are included in this volume. The former owner's name is written in pen on the front title page. An envelope addressed to 'Mrs E Harvey' and containing a colour, printed Christmas card on folded, textured parchment-type paper from 'Mary McCarthy' is included. 8vo. No dust-jacket.
